Kaylene

Good Morning, Friends,

I haven't posted much lately so some of you may not know me - I'm suffering with

a painful crippling problem in both feet. It's a long story but it results from

birth deformities. I amazingly, and thankfully, walked for 48 years, but my

time on my feet is about done. It's so painful that it feels like I walk on

shattered ankles 24/7.

Anyway, what I'm here to ask is this - can a person get on disability even if

they have not had a job outside of the home for awhile? I worked outside a

little when I first married - at a bank. Then, I had children and we decided

that I would stay home to raise them. Then, we ended up home schooling all

three boys, so I was home for 20 years. I just went back to work about 7 months

ago. I can tell that it is only a matter of time before I just will not be able

to tolerate walking at all.

My mom suggested I look into disability; however, my question is this - if I

have not worked outside of the home for a long time, are disability benefits

even available to me?

My husband has worked hard for years and poured mega-taxes into the system, so I

don't feel bad about having to use some of the government benefits. I just

don't know if it is an option.

Thanks,

Kath

Kathy,

You need to request your social security benefits statement. It

will list what you are eligible to receive. Also, call your local

social security office for information, they are very helpful. I was

afraid to call them because of horror stories I had heard but everyone

I talked to at the social security office was helpful and told me

everything I needed to do.

States differ on what programs are available ,so that is why I

said to call the office, even though the federal program applies for

everyone. I would take out a private disability insurance if it is

offered to you. I just happened to do that and even though I had a bad

back, I had an auto wreck injuring me in a different area and I was

eligible for 70 per cent of my salary. I also was able to get my

social security the first time. They told me it helped that I had

careful documentation of my condition, health records, treatment

documentation, and mental health and pain diaries. Make sure you

have a doctor that will support you when you make that decision. It

does not hurt to talk to your doctor early about this also.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck and let us know what you find out.

Bennie
