Guest guest
For Vitamin E, is that 400IU per day? Reply-To: iga-nephropathy To: <iga-nephropathy > Subject: Things not to take Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 13:52:58 -0400 For those who are interested, here's the list of supplements they tell renal insufficiency patients (<30% or so kidney function) to take or not to take, here in Ottawa: Do not take a multivitamin. Do not take vitamin A. No high dose vitamin C. Do supplement B-complex, folic acid (a recommended brand, once a day). Iron only if prescribed. Vitamin E is Ok (400 IU suggested as appropriate) Most herbal and over-the-counter meds are Ok - BUT ALWAYS CHECK WITH RENAL TEAM before starting anything new. Painkillers - No NSAIDS at all (aspirin, ibuprofen). Take regular strength Tylenol for pain if you have to. Added codeine is hard for the kidneys to get rid of, so it CAN build up in your system - but it's Ok to take it once in a while. Guest guest
Yes, that's per day. BTW, it's not a recommendation, just a statement that they think it's Ok to take. In my case, my neph recommended it as something that might help with foot cramps. Guest guest
I am taking 400IU twice a day but I still get bad cramps. I'm going to book a massage and talk to my neph about the cramps and salt in June. Guest guest
Unfortunately, it doesn't always work for that purpose. In fact, some nephrologists dispute that vit e works at all at stopping cramps. Pierre Re: Things not to take > Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 20:35:19 -0400 > > Yes, that's per day. Guest guest
I don't think I would mind so much if they happened more often in the day than the night. It gets a bit tedious waking in the night with the pain. My husband thinks it is because I am not taking enough salt, but I am sure between all of us we blame the cramps on just about every substance in the world. When I do take salt (by accident more than design) I get palpitations which is a bit scary, especially when you are eating out! I would ask the doctor before self medicating. Oh, I believe there are a few kinds of quinine, if the doctor decides you have it get the exact one the doctor prescribes. Mike in California. Guest guest
Hi there Is there any women in the group on HRT - I would be interested to know. I think the particular brand I am on might be making my kidney function worse- it mentions about kidney disease in the leaflet and I have had a note from my doctor to get my blood pressure taken every 3 weeks so I think I will have a list of questions for him when I see him. Guest guest
Hi Jeanie.... I'm on hrt. I'm taking Aldactone (spiractin or spironolactone are other names for it) I also read where it can affect kidney patience...yet my neph told me they use it for kidney patience.(Go figure). It was taken off the market a while ago but it's available again. It has helped with a lot of my symptoms.....like the numb hands I would get through the night. Also the tops of my hands where always bruising for no apparent reason, which now isn't happening as often. And my feet don't pain when I walk now. I'd say they warn about kidney patience in the instructions because it adds potassium to your body. One of my other medications also retains potassium....so I have to be on a low potassium diet now. Do you have any side effects from the hrt? I find my hair has no shine along with some other side effects I don't think I'll mention here:) kaz Re: Things not to take Hi there Is there any women in the group on HRT - I would be interested to know.
