Hi - Insomnia can be very exhausting, both mentally and physically. I can certainly empathize. I feel like I've got a " sleep dept " of months built up now! I was up until 3:45 last night, unable to sleep because of pain, and up again at 8 a.m., unable to get back to sleep once I woke up at my usual time. Eventually it will all probably catch up to me and I'll crash and burn. I know I feel a whole lot older than I should, and most of that is due to lack of sleep. I wish I could offer more than moral support. There are sleeping meds that you can take in the middle of the night once you wake up like this. Sonata is a four-hour sleeping med that can be taken twice a night - once when you go to bed and then again when you wake up in the middle of the night like you're doing. There's also Ambien CR, which is supposed to release the med slowly to keep you asleep. I prefer Sonata myself - I don't feel as groggy the next morning. But after a while, these kinds of meds don't seem to help as much, so I'm off them for a while. More than anything, if your pain is waking you up, you need better control of the pain and the sleep will take care of itself. Talk to your doctor and tell him what is happening. If you're on a short- acting opiod that wears off after four hours, it's no wonder you're waking up in the middle of the night. If that's the case, you definitely need to be switched to a long-acting opiod, like Oxycontin, MSContin (or Kadian), Fentanyl, or Methadone. If money is an issue, methadone is extremely cheap! Meditation and deep breathing also help me some when nothing else will work. It at least takes the stress out of being awake! I hope you can find some solutions, and some peaceful sleep.
