Guest guest
Hi ann, I don't have much time to post, but yes, Methadone is excellent for pain. I use it, and have been on the same dose for over 3 years now. I had tried everything, OxyContin, Fentanyl Patch, Morphine, you name it. Trying methadone was my only hope, and it wasn't a financial matter (although that does help!). Apparently this drug hits a different receptor, and seems to help nerve pain better. As for side effects, yes, there are some, but for me they are the same as any opiod. After a few weeks they went away, and my life has been great ever since. Don't let the negative connotation of Methadone scare you away...it is a fantastic medication. It works immediately, and lasts a long time. In fact, the doctor will teach you about the long half-life, because it can be easy to overdose on this med. I must run, but let me know if you have any questions! p.s. I don't even need break-through meds anymore! From: unicornmom1062 I called and told them, the dr office, and so they are gonna give me methadone instead. My question is is that any good for pain and what might the side effects be and when can I expect it to start working. Thanks for the help. Guest guest
Methadone IS great for pain control. Just be very for-warned that Methadone is the hardest opiate to withdraw from. It takes months, sometimes many months to completely get free of it. It is very cheap though compared to Suboxone and most other opiates. Suboxone on the other hand works just as well for pain, but is very easy to withdraw from in comparison. I know the use of Suboxone for pain is off label right now, but many drugs are used off label these days. It is up to the discretion of the treating Dr. to decide and is not illegal to do so. There are many pain specialists that use Suboxone not only for withdrawing from opiates, but they also use it for long term pain management. People have been on Suboxone for many years and have had little to no adverse side effects. Something to discuss with your pain Dr. next time you see him and your present pain medication isn't working well for you anymore. >> I called and told them, the dr office, and so they are gonna > give me methadone instead. > > My question is is that any good for pain and what might the side effects be and when can I expect it to start working. Guest guest
I am probably going to be the only one here but I just last week requested to be taken off methadone. I was on 30 mg per day more if I needed it. It did me no good at all. I saw no let up of pain. I tried it for six months. They increased the dosage. nothing. So I am going off of it. Of course I am going slowly off of it. It will take a while, but it did me no good at all. At first I think it did help. After about three weeks it did not seem to do much and after a couple of months I actually felt it was doing nothing at all. So I just asked to be taken off of it. I never had any side effects from it at all.
Guest guest
Its really weird about how meds work different with people. The neuropathy that has made me stop every thing in the world that I like for 6 years, Does best with just plain old tramodol. I’ve had and still got just about every pain medince ever made, but I really start to sweat when the tramadol gets low. Weird isn’t it? By the way I finally get started on my Nerve stimulation device testing May the 6th. ron patterson --- Gwen wrote: > I am probably going to be the only one here but I > just last week requested to be taken off methadone. > ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Guest guest
Add me to the list - I was on it for two weeks and was nothing but a walking zombie. Not for me. Guest guest
Was put on it nearly 2 weeks ago, titrated up to 15 mg 3 times a day. After reading a message here that someone had problems with anxiety, I was curious and looked up the side effects and found insomnia there much to my surprise. I've had problems with insomnia for years, and I was re started on Lunesta when I first saw my pain specialist and it worked decently well...however after starting the Methadone I've had many more problems sleeping. I could take my Lunesta at 7 pm and I still wouldn't fall asleep until 5 am. I asked my home care nurse about it and she told me she's had patients with insomnia due to Methadone. On top of that, I'm having medication and water coming up from my J tube into my stomach, theory is my small bowel is FULL and taking medication 3 times a day is really not working anymore. So it looks like Methadone is a no go. Good thing I see my pain specialist on Monday, and I'm going to pick up some more morphine today and I'll mention it to his assistant. My nurse also told me that she has several patients on IV PCAs at home, and NONE of them are terminal or have cancer, it was just a last option for pain relief. That makes me feel better and she told me I should keep pushing the IV PCA for myself because since she's been seeing me (and I've heard this from many people for a while now) that I have VERY little bowel sounds in fact she only heard a bit in one quadrant (left upper) add that to my distention...at this point I'm trying to minimize any medications I'm taking through my tube and trying to move what I can to IV. It's clear my small intestine is being lazy to put it mildly LOL in DC " Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore non feci mai male ad anima viva " --Tosca **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros.
