Guest guest
Pierre, I was at work when I read your email and looked up felodipine in my medication database. Felodipine is considered a potent arteriolar dilator which characteristically produce predominant peripheral effects (peripheral edema, flushing, reflex tachycardia, or palpitations) which may be dose related, are usually transient, and diminish in intensity with continued treatment. Specifically PERIPHERAL EDEMA is the most common side effect associated with continued felodipine therapy and appears more frequently with higher doses. I don't think there is any visible difference in the way edema from medication sor from reanl failure looks. Maybe time will tell if it is from the kidneys or the drugs Sara H
Guest guest
Hi Pierre! Don't know about the drugs, but edema moves around and is worse in the ankles in ther evening than it is in the morning. Some days I can swell a shoe size. Reply-To: iga-nephropathy To: <iga-nephropathy > Subject: Swelling of feet Date: Mon, 5 Aug 2002 19:27:38 -0400 Hi gang. I don't think I've mentioned this on the group yet, but I've been having noticeable swelling in my feet for a couple of weeks now. I've never had swelling in my extremities before, even though I've been under 30% kidney function for about 3 years, at least, and under 20% for the past year. However, I've had the swelling in my feet for the past couple of weeks - so much that some of my shoes won't fit. By coincidence, my dosage of felodipine (a calcium channel blocker BP med) was increased from 5 mg to 10 mg daily a few weeks ago. The diuretic doesn't seem to be making any difference whatsoever. So, I'm beginning to think it may just be a side effect of the felodipine. Just wondering, since this is the first time I've encountered this on myself, how can you tell the difference between real edema and swelling as a side effect of a calcium channel blocker like felodipine? I'm sure some of you have been through this already. Anyone know? Guest guest
Thanks . That's about the size of it. Feet seem about right when I first get up, but get progressively worse as the day goes on. Well, have to bring my urine collection to the lab. That should be good for an hour's wait. Pierre Swelling of feet > Date: Mon, 5 Aug 2002 19:27:38 -0400 > > Hi gang. Guest guest
Couldn't you just pee at work : ) Me, I've always done the collection on a Sunday, and brought it in the next morning. Did it Monday in this case because of the long weekend. I don't about you guys and girls, but here, there's no appointment or a specific time, or anything. You just pick up the jug at the lab, do it whenever you want - as long as you bring the collection in the following morning. Pierre Re: Swelling of feet > I'm doing my collection today, and it was difficult to explain to my boss > what I needed all day today and half of tomorrow for... > > >
Guest guest
I try to collect on Sundays but that doesn't always work out, just because it's Sunday doesn't mean that I want to stay home all day, so this is what I do . I purchased a soft lunch type cooler to use exclusively for collection that fit the jug that the lab supplies. I had to look a while to find the right size it's about 7inches X 5 inches and about 7inches high. I purchased 2 freezer ice packs also to fit inside. I pack the jug, a couple of paper cups in a plastic bag and an ice pack into the cooler and off I go to work, or anywhere that I need to go. Because it just looks like you're carrying lunch nobody questions it. Many times I have had plans such as outings, parties or barbecues on the day that I needed to do a collection and I just pack myself up, leave the cooler in the car and run out to the car grab my cooler go to the restroom do my thing and run it back to the car. If it's too hot to leave in the car, I take it in with me and place it beside my purse, you'd be surprised that people may see you with the lunch bag but don't even question why you have it. If I have a long day planned away, then I may change out the ice pack mid day, I then refrigerate it overnight. Once when I told someone what was in the lunch bag, and how I collected she looked at me with horror and said you actually carry urine around with you? I asked her if she had a kidney disease that she was dealing with? Of course she said " no " and I said to her, " a long time ago, I decided that this disease has enough control over my life, it's not going to take control of my social life too. If I wouldn't have told you what was in this lunch bag, you'd have never known. She made me feel like I was doing something disgusting when I felt like I was trying to deal with the obstacles of kidney disease. I felt like saying " how can you question what I do to be normal " . It's funny, the technicians at the lab tease me, because they always say to me " I see you brought us lunch again! " I bought a real wild color because it fits my personality and for me it comes back to the " smugness " issue. (to quote ) The technicians think that it's a great idea and passed it along to other patients who need to collect on a regular basis PS, If you do carry your lunch you may want to purchase a different color so you don't get them confused!!! Just kidding. It really works wonderful and it gives me a sense of freedom. Guest guest
I think it's a very good idea to do that way. I've always suspected that most of us (including me) tend to be a little sedentary on the day of the collection, and this might slightly affect the results, making them look a little better than they really are. I use a couple of different labs, depending on which is more convenient to get to on any particular day. Both of them put the jug in a brown paper bag when they give it to me. But in the old days (can't believe I can say the " in the old days " !), they would just hand over a jug. And it wasn't the compact little rectangular ones they have now. It used to be just a big plain jug, similar to what a gallon of generic Javex comes in at the supermarket. Then some supplier came up with the idea of a collapsible jug, and labs handed those out for a while. I guess they must have stopped due to customer complaints. It was supposed to open up gradually as you pee'd in it. The only problem was that the first few times, it tended to splash back up at you : ) I haven't seen any of those in about 5 or 6 years, I guess. Anybody else ever use one of those? Guest guest
It can be too far back in the " old days " because I have used both a couple of times. I loved the collapsible one, as it came with a small funnel which was, with out a doubt, totally useless. I don't really care to much what others think about " my bottle " , and if they ask, I just say its home brew. Living in Australia has its benefits...... Guest guest
Connie, you are amazing! I am always in a lather of apprehension that I may lose my collection at the last minute - even without taking it on picnics with me. My neph says do your collection on this date, and I do it (I'm always happy to take a day of work for that). I've got a good needle bruise this time. Guest guest
I was given the large gallon plastic bottles that are the catering size for vinegar or tomato sauce in the shops! I couldn't go to the hospital personally so I sent it by motorbike courier and didn't tell him exactly what it was but said it wasn't inflammable and to keep it upright! Hi Pierre, We have never been handed a collapsible jug. We still get the huge ones that look like bleach jugs in a brown paper bag. What company makes the smaller ones? It has been rainy here in PEI except for today. Haven't made it to the beaches yet except for the boardwalk in Charlottetown. Erna T

They are small, rectangular jugs, with the cover at one end, and a full-length handle the rest of the way on top. The ones I've had are always red. You've run into typical summer weather in the Maritimes, I'm afraid. It's beautiful there, but it can rain a lot. If you've never been, you can't go to PEI and miss the drive up from Charlottetown to Cavendish Beach! If you go, be careful though. The waves come in pretty strong there sometimes. Once, when we were there with some family, a wave hit my niece and totally dislocated her knee out of its socket! They had to take her by ambulance all the way to Charlottetown. By the way, that's a pretty, quaint little city, isn't it. Did you visit Province House - the birthplace of Confederation? Pierre

Guest guest
I love it Sally!!! It's kind of like when I'm out with my " wild " lunch box, what they don't know won't hurt them. It's my secret. The lab used to give me the large gallon jugs, but now the container is really very small and compact. Since my volume of urine is not that great, I don't come close to filling it up and it really fits great in the soft lunch cooler. I will try to find out what company manufactures them. I think that I use the same that someone described in their posting. (Sorry I can't find the e-mail now, but you know who you are!) It has the lid on the top with a handle across one entire side, so it is easy to handle. The lab furnishes a brown color, which is good, considering the looks of my urine sometimes! Connie, USA P.S. Hey I do have another question though, my Neph is a nut case about drawing blood on the day that you deliver urine. He says that you don't get a true picture of the numbers of the s creatinine, bun, c clearance, etc. unless the blood is drawn on the day you deliver urine. Since you sent it by motorbike, how do they handle that for you? Just curious Re: Swelling of feet Date: Wed, 7 Aug 2002 10:49:26 -0400 I think it's a very good idea to do that way. Guest guest
Hi Connie, On that occasion I had blood taken a few days before and then did the collection.........I didn't have to re do it so I suppose all was OK. Sally. Re: Swelling of feet Date: Wed, 7 Aug 2002 10:49:26 -0400 I think it's a very good idea to do that way.
