Guest guest
Hello crewbies.... I have to share this story with you, sometimes I feel like it comes from a gushy romance novel or some television movie Some time ago, (at last 6 years, neither of us remember exactly when), I started to get the NF2 Review. At the time, I was a lonely teenager who had no idea there were others out there with this disease and I was somehow put onto the Review mailing list. There were some funny poems, good stories, but the part i liked was where others were looking for penpals....I was dying to talk to someone!!!!!!!!!!! After reading them I decided to write a letter to this guy in Las Vegas, his age was relatively close to mine and he seemed to have a wonderful sense of humor....the guy being none other than Dillon. For the next several years we exchanged letters, snail mail letters....sometimes months passed where we didnt write though...Both of our lives were pretty busy and it was always special to get a letter from a friend far away. In 1995, I went off to college and got a computer. At this time I remember it had been a long while since i talked to or heard from Pat, so I decided to try and find him. His email was of course listed in the Review, something @prodigy..knowing that info i signed up for prodigy (similar to aol i guess) and began my hunt....somehow we got in touch again, i ditched prodigy and have been an AOL member since.....anyway, our emails began and it was great to have a friend to talk to.... Of course you all know about the NF2Con, and for the past 3 or 4 years we talked about my coming out here, making plans and all...but every years something came up....surgery, finances....whatever the reason being we never had the opportunity to meet. Our friendship was never anything more than that, just a strong friendship, I could call him my best friend, easily. In 1999, I was looking forward to graduation, and looking for new opportunities. Kind of just did it and decided it was time to meet. I bought a plane ticket and we counted the days......December 2, 1999 I finally met my penpal!!!!!!!!! We spent about 10 days out here, talking and just having a great time....Before I even came out I had decided this is where i wanted to move...warm most of the year, opportunities everywhere just to be me.....I had bought a ticket to move out on December 27th.....unfortunatley surgery was set up and the move wouldnt happen, a least then. I did fly out and spent new years eve out here and flew back to NY in mid Jan. for surgery. I guess at this time, I will say what that first meeting was likeand how things have gone.....at the airport I couldnt stop crying, i was just so overwhelmed....(laughing) Pat left BOTH his and my cane in the parking lot at the airport and we didnt realize it till we arrived at a resturant for dinner....we made it INTO the resturant okay, a little wobbly but okay....after dinner we got up to leave and were fine till we got outside...CRASH Caren falls down....Pat tried to help me up and he too fell down!!!!!! I couldnt get up, everytime i did id fall down laughin again, eventually pat gotup and got the car and somehow I made it to the car!! Anyway, this whole time has just been a dream, I have never in my life met someone who is so much like myself, thinks the same as me, and is just so perfect being together...I will call Pat my soul mate, absolutley the truth in that too I did move out here, the weekend prior to the con and am just beyond anyones definition of happy and am very much looking forward to creating more memories and sharing more laughter together. thats all for now folks... Guest guest
Caren, that was beautiful and I think a real inspiation to all of us. Your letter made my day. I'm so glad everything has worked out for the two of you. My husband and I both love the city of Las Vegas, the strip, the shopping, the people, the climate, the beauty, the whole 9 yards. I wish you both well!
