Guest guest
Generally doctors prescribe a diuretic called Aldactone (aka spironolactone) and an extremely low-sodium diet. Even today I still routinely check out the nutrition label on canned and packaged goods. Oddly enough, increasing the amount of water you drink may help, too, mainly by stimulating your kidneys to process more fluid. Just don't overdo it. Elevate your legs whenever you sit to help relieve the edema that frequently accompanies the ascites. Unfortunately, having the ascites drained (a not too pleasant procedure anyway) brings only temporary relief and there's a real risk of infection. Keep in mind that ascites occurs when blood and bile back up in the blocked liver and seep into the abdominal cavity. I recall all too many days of having to wear the loosest possible clothes, which often meant leaving my shirt out because my pants were unbuttoned underneath. It got so bad I scoured thrift stores for " fat clothes. " When I asked my wife if that's what pregnancy feels like, she just rolled her eyes and muttered something about that " not being the half of it " and left the room. I've been married long enough to know it's best to drop the conversation at that point anyway.
