A while back I sought advice over whether my son's referral to cardiology because of a heart murmur warranted me finding out more information about what it might mean. I got a helpful set of mixed responses, naturally so, since everyone is different. Some feel information is power; some that ignorance is bliss!!!!I didn't look anything up, and as a result, my mind didn't have anything to back up its horrible thoughts. It was trying to tell me all sorts of terrible things might be wrong, but I couldn't really take it seriously, because I genuinely was ignorant.Anyway, last night I looked it up because his echocardiogram was this morning, and I wanted to know what questions I might need to ask. And last night, I didn't sleep a wink. My brain suddenly had access to all these scary images and stories which it could back up as

being "real" in some way, because we saw it on health pages of the web. It conveniently ignored all the bits saying heart murmurs are common and usually benign, but instead latched on to the stories of congenital heart defects and life-threatening operations. The mind really is the most biased and tendentious organism known to man, and seeks information only to whip me up into a frenzy of fear. How anyone can be make any truly rational decisions with one of these things between their ears is beyond me.Anyway, his echo was clear (YESSSSSSSS!), and my mind has shut up. Until next time :0) x

maybe underneath it all, is the belief that we cannot handle it

would certainly cause one to feel the need to protect themselves...hence anxiety

and fear
