The following is a list of the medications that are not safe to take

ORALLY once you have had gastric bypass surgery. Any drug

containing " aspirin or any NSAID " (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

drug) is not safe due to the risk of gastric and small intestinal

bleeding and possible ulceration.

**Aspirin (Artria, ASA, Enseals, Aspergum, Aspro, Astrin, Bayer

Aspirin, Bex, Coryphen, Easprin, Ecotrin, Empirin, Entrophen,

Halfprin, Novasen, Sal-Adult, Solprin, Supasa, 's Powders,

Winsprin Capsules, Zorprin)

*Bromfenac (Duract)

*Diclofenac (Fenac, Voltaren, Rapide, Cataflam)

*Etodolac (Ultradol, Lodine)

*Fenoprofen (Nalfon)

*Flurbiprofen (Ansaid, Froben, Apo-Flurbiprofen)

**Ibuprofen (Aches-N-Pain, ACT-3, Actiprofen, Advil, Amersol, Apo-

Ibuprofen, Bayer Select, Brufen, Excendrin IB, Genpril, Haltran,

Ibuprin, Ibuprohm, Ibu-Tab, Medipren, Menadol, Midol, motrin, Novo-

Profen, Nuprin, Nurofen, Pamprin, Rafen, Saleto, Trendar)

*Indomethacin (Apo-Indomethacin, Arthrexin, Indochron, Indocid,

Indocin, Novo-Methacin)

*Ketaprofen (Actron, Apo-Keto, Novo-Keto, Orudis, Oruvail, Rhodis)

*Nabumetone (Relafen)

**Naproxen (Apo-Naproxen, Naprosyn, Naxen, Novo-Naprox, Nu-Naprox,

Aleve, Anaprox, Apo-Napro-Na, Naprelan, Naprogesic, Synflex)

*Oxaprozin (Daypro)

*Piroxicam (Apo-Piroxicam, Feldene, Novo-Pirocam, Pirox)

*Sulindac (Aclin, Apo-Sulin, Clinoril, Novo-Sundac, Saldac)

Pain medication options after gastric bypass

*Tylenol in any form

*Tylenol with codeine

*Vicodin

*Percocet, Darvocet, Fioricet, Oxycontin

*Toradol (ketoraloac): only if given by injection or IV

*Celebrex (celecoxib) or Vioxx (rofecoxib) (these new drugs called

-2 inhibitors have less risk of causing gastric bleeding than

NSAIDs)

*Ultram (tramadol)

*Soma, Flexeril, Robaxin, Zanaflex, other prescription muscle

relaxants

*for migrains: Imitrex, Ergotamine, Deseril

OF COURSE Naproxen(Aleve) is too harsh for our pouches! (Just crush

some in some food and feel what it does to your mouth...!) And, yes,

your list is accurate. I suggested to PL that she use Motrin/aspirin

etc. for her bad body aches only as a one day-type usage (and with

the precautions of drinking LOTS of water with it to wash it through

the pouch, and to eat something to further coat her stomach). I'm not

surprised if your stomach is torn up if you've been using NSAIDS

everyday! Only thing to do now is wait for it to heal... Always tell

all your doctors about our surgery and how we've been rearranged.

Sorry you're sick...

TAM--Get used to reading your ingredients on the package and you'll

have your answer! Reg. Excedrin has both caffeine and aspirin in it...

Poo, I hope these headaches go away after surgery as it's the only thing

I've found that gets rid of them.

Hi all. My rheumatologist put me on an anti-inflammatory called Salsalate. He

said it was as safe as Tylenol, although the warnings do seem to be the same as

for other NSAIDS on the prescription facts sheets. I was put on this because I

did have ulcers but needed something for my pain. They are large pills, you

would probably have to cut them into fourths to take them. I take two in the

morning and two in the evening. I don't know if these are still OK after

surgery, but I do know that they've never caused me any stomach discomfort. I

will be asking my surgeon about this med when I see him on April 4th.

Can you get Rx for some Prevacid or Prilosec AND some Carrafate, like NOW?

Another 2 weeks could have you in BIG trouble. WE don't have that much " fabric "

to take chances with ulcers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It's aspirin! Ow!

I NEVER could take any of this stuff, since I was the original Ulcer Queen since

the 70's. So, I hear the name, I feel pain in the stomach I no longer even HAVE

because it was so pitted with antique ulcer scars.

Ask about gastric bleed. It often happens without any pain at all and can be

FATAL. It's no joke to avoid these meds. A few weeks of the supposedly safe

Celebrex had me doubled over for 4 months on HUGE doses of Prilosec & Carrafate

to undo the damage done.

Hi Jeanne,

I lived with RA for 4 yrs. and have now been in remission for about 6. At

the time I was taking ibuprofen and Methotrexate as my main meds. Someone

on another list said that this surgery could cause RA and/or Lupus, but that

's the first time I ever heard anything like that.

Have you heard anything about this?

in California :)

Re: List of Medications

Hi all. My rheumatologist put me on an anti-inflammatory called Salsalate.

He said it was as safe as Tylenol, although the warnings do seem to be the

same as for other NSAIDS on the prescription facts sheets. I was put on

this because I did have ulcers but needed something for my pain. They are

large pills, you would probably have to cut them into fourths to take them.

I take two in the morning and two in the evening. I don't know if these are

still OK after surgery, but I do know that they've never caused me any

stomach discomfort. I will be asking my surgeon about this med when I see

him on April 4th.

No I haven't, . I don't have RA, just fibromyalgia. But I started seeing

the rheumatologist since FMS is related to arthritis. I stopped seeing him a

couple of years ago and now my primary doc handles my meds.

I can tell you it's the caffeine. I have had bad headaches since I was 8 some

I had used to last for weeks at a time. before my surgery I had them EVERY

day. That was one major reason for the surgery. I must say that they are

better but I still get them but not as much. My migraines are still around

but I don't get them as often as I used to. My neurologist says that most

meds that we take for migraines have caffeine in them

OK so now I wonder if it's the mixture of the aspirin and the caffeine

that's curing my headaches or if it's just the aspirin or just the

caffeine...
