Guest guest
Some days I get stuck in my own problems, in my own head, in my own storied up version of what is and isn't....and in the process, lose the larger world. This video wakes me up to a larger world. All my problems, deadlines, etc., yes, and a world where children are found in boxes, make their way to another continent, grow up amidst love, grow up with a number of body parts missing, hug a brother with whatever parts of arms they possess, dare to sing out loud. It is a big rich world out there. I forget. It is a reminder to let go of preconceptions about what is possible--not to confuse what is likely with what is possible. It reminds me of what a horrid burden serving social comparison is. This kid could not do what he is doing without stepping out into space on social comparison. Cool. I can do that.warm regards, kelly G. 205 Peabody BuildingPsychology DepartmentUniversity of MississippiOxford, MS 38677ph: fax: academic homepage:www.olemiss.edu/working/kwilson/kwilson.htmalso check outwww.onelifellc.comwww.mindfulnessfortwo.comwww.facebook.com/kellygwilsonwww.tastybehaviorism.comwww.abnormalwootwoot.com - Will you say a bit more about "perspective taking?" Guest guest
Hi Detlef, Helena. I didn't think I was trying to make a point, but I guess I was. It really gets to me that some people can accept hardship 10 times greater than I face, whilst I struggle with my much smaller grievance with life. I am seethingly jealous of their acceptance. How on earth did they find acceptance, when I can't. Most of them didn't even use ACT to help, whilst I practice all the time. When I see someone in a terrible situation, smiling away, full of the joys of spring, I know it should inspire and put things into perspective, but it only seems to mock me! Boy, I really am feeling sorry for myself tonight. I'm not particularly proud of having these feelings. xTo: ACT for the Public <ACT_for_the_Public >Sent: Friday, 16 September 2011, 20:16Subject: Re: Re: Inspiring Story Detlef, thanks for stating what I was thinking but couldn't articulate. And, I also see 's point: That our problems seem to pale in comparison with what other people have gone through, and that is an opportunity to put things in perspective. Perspective is helpful and can be healing. Yet, our pain is still our pain. Pain is PAIN. Helena To: "ACT for the Public" <ACT_for_the_Public >Sent: Friday, September 16, 2011 12:56:36 PMSubject: Re: Inspiring Story What I take from this, , is not that it diminishes our pain or invalidates our experience in any way, but that there is the possibility of acceptance of whatever comes our way, in spite of it all, and of our ability to make room for whatever comes, and yet find a moment of joy in even the bleakest of circumstances.Warm regards,Detlef> >> > > > Here's an inspiring story about acceptance and living a valued life.
