Guest guest
I'm back! :)I read a monthly newsletter from the " anxiety coach, " Dr. Carbonell. This month, he wrote his formula for anxiety:Biological Vulnerability + Learned Vulnerability + Misunderstanding of Mind = Anxiety Disorder (http://www.anxietycoach.com/Anxiety_Coach-anxiety-disorder.html) Snip: " However, we also experience an internal world, one of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. There's a different rule in this world. It's this: the more you oppose a thought, emotion, or sensation--the more you try to get rid of it or avoid it--the more you have it.---Learning to work with, rather than against, the internal symptoms of an anxiety disorder is the way out. Responding to the symptoms with acceptance methods, rather than anti-anxiety, is the way out. This is what Weekes meant by " float, " and it's just as true today as when she first wrote it. " Of course, we're all familiar with these statements! But I realized after I read this that I now have help in all three areas ... I'm getting biological support/treatment for my adrenal fatigue/hormonal imbalance from an integrative health care team and bio-identical hormone therapy; help with the learned component from my CBT/ACT therapist; and help with " misunderstanding of the mind " from ACT (which I admit I put " on the shelf " and have only recently thought about again, as I continue to struggle with my panic disorder/agoraphobia). (In terms of acceptance, I have even been doing The Work, which helped me to learn that I *should* have panic attacks because I have panic disorder, whereas *should not* had been my mantra for so long. It's more a mental acceptance right now, as I'm still working on accepting the physical sensations in my body.) So, I guess you could say I'm trying a holistic approach to my mental health issues.~ lisa
