Guest guest
I was doing some research and came across some limited information on this new technique. I even read about a gore tex surgical membrane being used during detethering surgeries to prevent retethering to scar tissue. I'm really curious if this is being done more now. Guest guest
I don't believe that my ns used goretex, but he did sew my spinal cord to itself after removing the lipoma to decrease surface area and reduce scar tissue. Those sutures are permanent. Then, he enclosed the whole thing in bovine sheathing to prevent a spinal fluid leak. The procedure took over 8 hours. When I was considering surgery, another ns said he would simply " snip " the lipoma to release my cord. Yet another ns was going to debulk the lipoma and detether, but no preventative measures to prevent retethering. There are several techniques and opinions about this sort of surgery. Keep researching. I am only 3 1/2 months post op. So, it is too soon to know how sucessful my surgery was. However, it is clear that not only there are indeed different techniques for surgery, but not all tetherings are equal. Some lipomas are quite intertwined with nerves which makes surgery complicated. Not all ns are willing to risk complicated procedures. > > > > I was doing some research and came across some limited information on this new technique. Guest guest
Can I ask where you had your surgery and by who? Hope things go well in your recovery Thanks, > > > > > > I was doing some research and came across some limited information on this new technique. Guest guest
Dr Pang in Oakland did my surgery. I had to travel for my surgery. He is extremely busy and may be difficult to get an appointment with. However, he is actively teaching his technique to other drs. Perhaps it would be possible to find someone who learned it from him. I am continuing to make progress in my recovery and it too soon to say how " successful " my surergy ultimately was. I hope you can find someone who will meet your medical needs. Good luck. -Carol > > > > > > > > I was doing some research and came across some limited information on this new technique. Guest guest
Thanks Carol. Wishing you all the best in your recovery. Keep us posted on how you are doing. I had never heard of sewing the cord back to itself to prevent scarring. Very interesting. > > > > > > > > > > I was doing some research and came across some limited information on this new technique.
