Guest guest
I had CST by an Upledger trained therapist back in about 2001 to release my hip from my sacrum, release tight aductors, and release my rock hard right calf muscles. I called her Miss Magic Fingers. A few years later my hip locked up again. Miss Magic Fingers left to work for the VA but my doc found me another CST therapist and he released my hip in 20 min. No hip problems since. Rick JBobin said the following on 8/23/2010 11:37 AM: > The Upledger Institute was named for the guy who invented CST. Guest guest
I think I was getting this confused with active release therapy (ART). I'm thinking these are not the same thing now. ________________________________ To: tetheredspinalcord Sent: Thu, March 17, 2011 6:10:39 AM Subject: CST Just wanted to add a small warning and this comes from an experience quite a while ago and not sure if it was anecdotal - so please keep that in mind when reading: After my second (third?) surgery I had PT. She wanted to try CST to see if she could help my spinal fluid headaches, but because of the Chiari she called my nsg to make sure he thought it would be ok. To my surprise, he said absolutely not - there was a risk that the CST would move things ever so slightly which could make the herniation worse. This nsg is very mainstream and I was shocked that he felt that it would carry any risks and believed in it's effects to that end. We went ahead and tried it anyway because nothing was helping these head pains - I lucked out in that she was very well trained and stayed away from the bones that had risk attached. It did help the spinal fluid headaches while I attended PT though (they returned a couple of months later). Just a caution that if you do have Chiari - ask to assure it's safe for you. It may now be known that it doesn't make Chiari worse, but just in case ... Kathy RE: CST I think it just depends on the insurance. I actually had a workers comp insurance cover it for me after a thoracic injury. I was shocked! It was done by a PT though, maybe thats why. Anyway, I was glad I got it and I found it very helpful > >>I had CST by an Upledger trained therapist back in about 2001 to release >>my hip from my sacrum, release tight aductors, and release my rock hard >>right calf muscles. Guest guest
Wow! I am really surprised that your PT went ahead and did that treatment even though your nsg said absolutely no. She could have lost her license for that especially if anything had gone wrong with you. Thank goodness it helped, but very risky treatment from your PT. Guest guest
She was fantastic. We both agreed to keep it quiet - she was completely about the patient and it was my third time seeing her for help. She truly was the most well-versed PT I've met. If you are currently doing PT, ask him/her if they are trained in CST and if any other PT's within that organization are trained. If you are not in PT you can ask your doctor to prescribe PT for your hip. It most likely would do no good to ask your doctor if the PT he/she is referring you to is trained in CST because he/she probably doesnt know or care. If you have a physiatrist (doctor trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation), he/she will know about CST and be able to make recommendations. Also many massage therapists are now trained in CST. Then the CST will know exactly what to do. Initially it took 3 months CST 3 x week for an hour each visit to finally get relief, so do not expect a miracle the first treatment.
