Guest guest
I had this done during my initial untethering - four untetherings later; still tethered. Not sure if others had better luck. Kath Re: Stay Sutures to Prevent Retethering Can you direct me to where you read this and who is using this. I even read about a gore tex surgical membrane being used during detethering surgeries to prevent retethering to scar tissue. I'm really curious if this is being done more now. >
Guest guest
I believe we have had some people on this list that got the gore tex but reacted to it causing more scar tissue, cant swear on it though. Guest guest
I had bovine pericardium used for my dural graft (gortex was available then too, although I didn't know about it, though, I doubt it would have made any difference). My body didn't like the bovine pericardium and attacked it with scar tissue (what the body does to protect itself from bad things). It caused MAJOR retethering that I was symptomatic from 4 months post-op. There have been others who have had gortex and had the same problem. Each surgeon has his own ideas of what (s)he does that thinks prevents scar tissue. Peronally, I don't think it matters what they do. You can lay flat for 3 days, be rolled every 4 hours (so you don't spend long enough in one place to allow scarring to occur), use different graft materials, etc - I think if your body is prone to scar tissue, it is going to generate the stuff no matter what you or the surgeon does to try and prevent it. But, this is just my personal observation from all the different tactics I have seen surgeons use over the years on the list. You can have two patients get the identical treatment and one will have a symptomatic retether and the other will not. I just don't think there is a way to predict or prevent it (at least with the current technology).
