Guest guest
So glad you all decided to go in! I'm sorry she is in so much pain but hopefully they will get on top of it soon. Fantastic news on the legs though!!!!  HUGS, Subject: Todays Surgery To: tetheredspinalcord Date: Friday, January 28, 2011, 9:13 PM  Beth had her surgery today, and sure enough she was tethered AGAIN. The fifth, I would like to think the last, but I won't get my hopes up. Dr Grant said she was stuck really tight, very low on the cord, lot's of scar tissue. The nerves were really compromised, and he said they just sent the monitors into a tizzy. There apparently had been a leak at some point that had healed itself. He said it could possibly have been oozing a small amount of CSF seeing as she was having the headaches, but there was nothing obvious. She was having some bladder leakage with occasional incontinence, and no sensation from L1 down on the right side, minimal on the left side, and had consistently gotten weaker to the point of only being able to slightly wiggle the toes on both feet. Still don't know the future of the bladder. She has been in excruciating pain with the bladder since waking up. The legs are moving, at least at this point, and if you even get close to the feet she goes into a fit. So, obviously the nerves were all tangled up. I have not been very happy with her pain control today. They began at 8:15 and finished up around 12:30, she has just now gotten easy enough to go to sleep.  I am so glad we decided to go ahead and do the surgery. I just hope and pray that it helps with the pain. The surgery in 09 didn't do a lot to help with pain, We are just praying this time is different. Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers, and I will keep you posted. Guest guest
I had severe pain with my first surgery, & the surgeon that dud my following two agreed he would keep me very comfortable. He kept his promise. They had me under conscious sedation for the first 4 days post-op. Mom says I was in some pain, but I don't remember. Well, i have a handful of fleeting memories, but nothing like what i went thru after the first Can u ask the MD about doing this? Another issue is if she takes narcotics for chronic pain mgmt, then it can take an even higher dose than they would normally use bc her body is used to them in her system. I always end up going thru severe withdrawal about a week post op bc the dose they have to use to control my post op pain is so high. When I don't need it anymore, I stop using the PCA. But the body just can go from Mt. Ecstasy to sea level in 2 days. So, they typically end up treating my withdrawal symptoms (severe agitation & feeling like I need to move everywhere & run a marathon, or handcycle for hours, as the case may be) with Valium or similar Rx for 2-3 days until the symptoms subside.
