Russ,

Geez, I don't know. Maybe I've read too many ACT books. But I think

for regular, non-therapist folks who want to get a grasp of ACT principles

outside of a workbook context, " ACT Made Simple " is a pretty easy read.

Plus it has abundant context for thinking about how to present concepts

to others w/out getting too heady - which is what is working on

in her public presentations. So I think it depends on what one's purpose is.

And again the ebook price (Kindle) is pretty low so if I were someone

wanting to learn about ACT more deeply I wouldn't shy away from it.

I suspect may understand Act Made Simple pretty well before she is done! She seems full of surprises., the concepts have been around for millennia, so I have been reading my way through all the books rather than focusing on the newer ones.

Hi , ACT Made Simple is a textbook for therapists, and it’s a pretty thick volume, so I wouldn’t recommend it for you. The Reality Slap is not a new revision of ACT – it’s just a different way of writing about it. And yes, it is by far the easiest to read of all my books - as well as the slimmest.

 All the best,

Cheers, Russ

HI Sara, GOYM is Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life. Cheers,

salaamz:-)I have been working on get out of your mind and into your life, and the happiness trap, i go back and forth, and basically half way through both. I am borrowing  the book, 'i feel terribly, horribly wrong' . i am never able to complete one book fully, if i try doing that, i will just be stuck and will never complete it.

I wanted to get an ACT book that is very simple reading at the same time outlines act principles thoroughly. I was thinking ACT made simple. Russ 's style of writing is the easiest for me to grasp, after i understand things in his writing, i find it easier to understand get out of your mind...

my question is now that Russ new book is out, does that mean some of the ACT things in the old book is outdated, i.e. newer concepts easier to grasp? e.g. russ harrris's email said <<Also, rather than following the traditional ACT framework of the hexaflex, I have based this book on the ‘three Ps’ of mindful living: Presence, Purpose and Privilege. >>>

so the reality slap is the newer revision of ACT? Just like looks like now 'self as context' is no longer as much 'observing self' rather it is observer self + the ability to take another person's perspective , yea?

but is The Reality Slap  as much of an easy read as I heard the ACT made simple book is? plusdoes it also  teach the basics of act first?also i heard a couple times people mention Goym, and goymi somethin somethin, i can't find these books on amazon for some reason . what language is that in?

-K Designs.

It sounds like I need to give in and buy the Happiness Slap for my Nook.  (the new Nook is fantastic)

Unemployment check comes soon!I bought and gave ACT Made Simple to my therapist.  I did not read it before I gave it to her though.

This describes me, too. I get excited about a new method that promises relief. Most recently, it's been self-compassion. I have tried every method I have come across and I've stuck with ACT most of all. One of the advantages to me is that it allows me to keep trying to move forward in the method while not doing it perfectly. If I fail with ACT, it allows me to try again.I'm one of those people who have been on the search for the method or insight that will cure me. I've read and heard enough life-changing wisdom for 100 lifetimes, have tried my best to absorb and believe them, and I still don't consider myself cured. Though I keep hoping, I have the suspicion that there's not much left for me to learn, that I have enough head knowledge and that no one is coming from the outside to rescue me. That leaves me feeling scared and lonely since it's my thoughts and mental conditioning that have gotten into this mess to begin with. I don't feel like I have what it takes within me to recover. I was encouraged the other day to read say the he suffered from panic disorder, in the past tense. I continue to hope that I will someday be able to describe my depression and anxiety in the past tense. Thanks to what I've learned, I no longer expect to never suffer from these emotional states. But I would like to have some parts of some days feel positive. Most days, I have one mood, an anxious and depressed one that lasts the entire day. Thoughts come and go but the feeling remains. The acceptance part of ACT keeps me trying to be OK with that and the commitment part keeps me acting on my values as best I can.I've read all the ACT books I can find and they've all been helpful. The Happiness Trap and Get Out of Your Mind... are the basic texts for me.BruceFor me, I used to fly (like a butterfly !) from book to book, and even from method to method(belonging to another perspective) without finishing any book, any method...wondering always wich is the best, the more accurate,...and this process lasted for years !As I specified in another post, a very important thing I learned from GOYM is how to defuse from my doubts and this allowed me to finish the book .I found this approach much fruitful: choose any book,method...and make a commitment with yourself that you'll work with it until you finished it or for a specified duration ( 6 months,...)Begin by reading the whole book first rapidly without doing the exercises, without interruption even if sometimes you don't get the point. After this first reading, you could now read it the second time ,more slowly, doing the exercises suggested ... If while in the half way your mind begins chattering about that (may be this is not the right choice, the other one is more easy ,...)that's a golden opportunity to use your defusion and acceptance technics ! >> > salaamz:-)> I have been working on get out of your mind and into your life, and the happiness trap, i go back and forth, and basically half way through both.
