You may want to check with her surgeon.. but my surgeon told me it was okay to

take milk of magnesia and he often prescribes either Pepcid, Zantac or Reglan

for post-ops having those problems.

Painful gas - help

Hi this is Katrina and I am writing for my mom in California. For

the last 4 hours she hasn't been able to move because of severe gas pain.

The pain runs around her stomach and back and she gets chills. Does anyone

know if it is ok to take pepcid ac or milk of magnesia? She is two weeks

post-op open RNY.

Thank you,

Katrina (for in California)

Dear ,

I had my surgery dec 22, 1999. USC medical center.

Dr Antone told me to use DEVROM is a chewable bismuth

subgallate tablet (Internal Deodorant). Look it up on

the web. It really helps with the gas and build up.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

Thank you to everyone who responded to my daughter's email. I took the Milk

of Magnesia, but then I started throwing up. Been throwing up all night.

Not been fun. I was pleased that at least I was hitting the bucket, but

then I was sitting up and fell asleep with the bucket in my hand and I

dropped it all over me, lol!!

So it's been about 12 hours since this started, but a bit before that since

I had any liquid in me. Does anyone know how to tell if you are dehydrated?

I have no intentions of putting anything inside of me right now since I'm

scared to death of it starting all over again. I thought about going to the

hospital in the night so that I could get some fluids in me and stop the

throwing up, but, of course, didn't want to take the drive unless necessary.

I'm a mother and a grandmother, but last night all I wanted was my mom to

take care of me.

I'm so thirsty and I don't want to play this game anymore :(

in California :)

Hi ;

in Pa. I had gas in the hospital and was sent home with Reglan. It

worked

wonderfully for me. Of course, your surgeon or PCP would have to prescribe

it.

Call your surgeons office. Better safe than sorry. in Pa.

Hi ;

What a terrible night. I was in the hospital with dehydration. I would wake

up in the morning and my mouth and tongue would be just about stuck together.

Verry very dry. I had no energy at all and just felt like I could not move.

Even tho you are vomiting I would still try to get in that water. Sip it

constantly.

If it keeps up I would definitely call the Dr. Dont fool around with this

dear.

- I would try just small sips of water for now. You can't just stop

drinking altogether. One of the signs of dehydration is when your skin loses

its elasticity. We naturally lose some of this as we age, that's why we

wrinkle, but it will be less elastic than normal. Hope this isn't too

confusing. You may want to at least call the doctor for some advice. Take

Care.

Hi ;

Seriously, I am worried about you. There is no way you should stop taking in

liquids even tho you are thowing them up. I had that attitude and I ended up

in

the hospital for 5 days and my kidneys were just about shutting down.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SURGEON. If the vomiting continues and you cant

keep anything down today call him today. Even tho its Sunday. That is my

advice to you. You must keep sipping water, even chicken broth, and possibly

the protein drinks. This is crucial. in Pa.

Hi

Yes your kidneys do get in trouble when you dehydrate. They had to call

in a kidney specialisht and I had to have tests every week for 4 weeks

after my hospital stay. I was 1 1/2 months out of SX when this happened.

I was not taking protein cause I did not know about it. It is so easy to

say I just cant drink this water it makes me sick and uncomfortable. Thats

what I did. I got in big trouble . So remember everyone sip that water as

if your life depends on it. It does!!!! Hugs in Pa.

Hi Jeanne,

I just woke up. I was able to take a few little sips before I fell asleep

again this morning. I had tried earlier to drink, but threw up everytime.

With nothing staying down I was getting concerned.

Thank you for writing :)

Oh , I'm sorry your grandma had to go through that. I know it's been

hard on you lately. I haven't been on board, but have remembered you in my

prayers. I finally had to delete a lot of emails, so you may have mentioned

that already.

When I wrote this morning at 4am I just kept thinking, " How am I ever going

to keep anything down. " I was still in pain although no longer throwing up

or having waves of gas pain. All the muscles in my stomach hurt.

Right now I'm eating a little bit of dried toast. I haven't been able to

keep protein down. My thought is that it will soak up any excess acids in

my stomach. Have no idea if I really know what I am talking about, but it

makes sense to me. Then I'm going to try some sips of water.

I appreciate you writing. Best wishes to you and your family.

Thanks ,

It was so painful. Never had gas like that in my life. My daughter stayed

up with me for hours. It just came in waves about every 2 minutes. Then I

guess it stopped for a little while. I remember my daughter going to bed.

When I woke up it all started over again including the throwing up.

Anyway, I feel ok right now. Just sore muscles. Thanks for writing !

Thank you . I never even thought of my kidneys shutting down. I

didn't know that could happen.

I will call him if it starts happening again. I've been able to keep down a

few bits of toast so far this morning.

I wish I could drink the protein, but I can't even walk by where they are

stored I start to get sick smelling them. Hopefully, that will pass soon.

Hi hon -

Is there someone who can run and get you some pedialite - or pedialyte with

flavors - or even popscicles? Liquid is liquid and that is a higher priority

than protein right now. The pedialyte has all the good stuff in it to keep you

from gettin deyhdrated if its all you can keep down. Or - freeze some and suck

Hi Deb,

Thank you for the information. I hadn't thought of that. Right now, I am

able to keep a few sips of water down. I'm going to try again soon. I ate

a few bites of dry toast.

I will keep the pedialyte and Popsicles in mind. That's a good idea.

Thanks for the hugs!!
