Greetings!

This week my attention is on fluoride. Last week I was asked to testify at a public hearing about fluoride because the town next to mine is considering eiminating water fluoridation as a budget cut. What a great reason! I did go testify and learned that things are changing in the world of water fluoridation...it's more toxic than we ever thought. Tomorrow night Toxic Free Talk Radio is going to be about fluoride. You are going to want to hear this.

And if you didn't hear my interview with Annie Bond last week, you can listen to it on demand at Annie Bond interview. If you have MCS please listen, because we both talk about our poisoning and recovery.

I know many of you wanted to see my television appearance a few weeks ago. I finally got a clip and posted it on my Toxic Free book page.

If you want to keep up with media stories, reviews and appearances, I'm posting them to my Toxic Free Book facebook page. Also, please go to this page and "like" it to spread the word.

If you already have a copy of Toxic Free and have been reading it, you can post your own review of the book on the Toxic Free page on my website or on amazon.com. It

really helps to have reviews, especially on amazon.

Debra :-)

Toxic Exposures from Wood Smoke

Last week a concerned reader sent some information to me about particulate toxicity from wood smoke, asking me to publish it. Below are her words unedited.

I commend you on your work. An issue that many are afraid to bring to the forefront and that is seriously affecting our health and quality of life is the health effects of wood smoke. It’s similar to the smoking and second-hand smoke issue, in that, although government-funded research studies showed it was harming the public health, it took a very long time for legislation banning it to be enacted. Interestingly, the government has a multitude of studies identifying the harmful and serious effects of wood smoke, but offers tax credits to those who install wood burning stoves. The movie “Thank You For Smoking†is a great example of corporations and government doing what is in their best interest, not ours.

In my neighborhood in Ann Arbor, MI, there has been an increase in wood burning in the last two years, and the neighborhood often smells like a campground...

Cat Vaccines

At some point we have to board our cats--either at a boarding facility or our vet's (we're leaning toward our vet). We're trying to decide whether or not to have them vaccinated against Feline Leukemia (Felv). It isn't required for indoor cats which ours are, however, boarding, unfortunately, places them at a higher risk because they can get it from bowls that aren't disinfected properly or even hissing due the saliva involved. They wouldn't have any other direct contact, but there could be hissing. Rare problems can arise from these vaccines, so I'm trying to decide if the benefits out weigh the risks. I've done a lot of research, but besides other vaccines which are absolutely required for boarding (and which our cats have), I did not find a lot of info about whether the increased risk of boarding justifies this particular vaccine. Any insight is greatly appreciated, as always.

Washing dishes

I always hand wash my dishes in hot water; I don't really use the dishwasher. Do you recommend using gloves? We have the Radiant Life whole house water filtration system, as well as the water purification system ( for drinking). However, I am concerned it's not enough after reading the section on water in "Home Safe Home." I am wondering if I should protect my hands from chemicals that migt still be present. Also, do you still use Castile soap for dishes? I bought Dr. Bronner's liquid soap to wash dishes and baby bottles/ parts, but notice it's not 100% pure. What do you recommend? Thank you!

waterbeds

Would like to know if anyone has any information on how safe waterbeds are. Including any and all information.....such as magnetic fields, molds, chemicals used to keep mold away in mattress parts, heater safety in regards to body, mattress itself, etc......

thank you so much!

Adding latex to mattress / EMFs concern

Actually I have two question here...

I bought my 2 1/2 year old son a Shepherds Dream mattress and topper after reading that you had one as well (I research your site before I buy everything now). I am contemplating buying the latex strips for the wood slats to make the bed softer. However, the latex is 60% synthetic, 40% natural. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of buying an all natural, non-toxic bed? It doesn't make sense to me to get the synthetic latex. They do offer 100%. Natural latex, but it does not last as long and is not as durable. I am wondering what you have and what you recommend.

Secondly, his bed is against a wall and there is an electrical outlet right over/next to his mattress. There isn't anything plugged into it, but is this still a bad thing? Is there any EMF concern even though nothing is plugged in? Should I try to move his bed? Unfortunately, it's the best place for his bed, I just wish the outlet wasn't there...

Thanks, Debra!

Difference between oil-based and water-based polyurethane for furniture

I would like to make sure that I understand the toxicity of the polyurethane that you would either brush on, or wipe on furniture, i.e., something like Minwax.

I believe I read here that the toxicity is in the solvents and once the polyurethane has cured that it is non-toxic.

So is it simply a matter of toxocity while it still smells and is curing and both would be inert once cured (which I think is 48 hours)?

Would that apply to both oil and water-based?

The only rub-on poly (for a hand rubbed look) I can find is oil-based. I do have good ventilation, can run air filters and even put it in a separate room while it cures, but I'm concerned about the difference after it cures (ongoing toxicity). Thanks.
