Guest guest
I've done yoga and pilates in the past and they definately help with stretching and strength. I would modify the moves to whatever I could do. Stopped last year though when my back started hurting. Subject: Yoga To: " Tetheredspinalcord " <tetheredspinalcord > Date: Thursday, March 24, 2011, 2:00 PM  Has anyone done yoga? Guest guest
Yoga helps me alot but I have to stick with the gentle stretching poses as opposed to the tighten/hold em strengthening poses...at least for now....and Thai massage (also called Thai yoga sometimes) is the most helpful thing I have done besides surgery. It is basically the gentle stretches done to you by someone else...although a true " authentic " thai practitioner also incorporates some heavy duty accupressure with it. Just explain your condition and tell them to take it easy! ha ha Subject: Yoga To: " Tetheredspinalcord " <tetheredspinalcord > Date: Thursday, March 24, 2011, 1:00 PM  Has anyone done yoga? Guest guest
Hi , Great minds think alike - I bought a one month yoga deal from Groupon about two months ago (good for a year). It was so cheap and I've always wanted to try it so I couldn't pass it up. I did write the yoga studio before purchasing to make sure they modified and they not only do modify, they offer " chair yoga " and another modified yoga class. I also asked my neuro-rehab doctor if it was ok to do this (had already purchased the pass) and she said yes and told me motions to avoid. Kathy Yoga Has anyone done yoga? Guest guest
I do pilates twice a week on the reformer machine. This has been a lifesaver for me -- when I started and after each surgery I had, I worked one on one with my physiotherapist but am now in regular classes. She always warned me about flexion -- always has me do exercises in straight back (now I have disk issues as well as TC). Also, I think there is just some common sense as well -- if it hurts or doesn't feel right, don't do it! Do you do PT? If so your physiotherapist should be able to tell you which exercises to avoid. There are things that I likely will never be able to do in class but my instructor offers me modifications. Dee To: tetheredspinalcord From: drwoo528@... Guest guest
, I have done chair yoga and Tai Chi. I preferred the Tai Chi. I liked the movements better and as a Christian didn't feel comfortable with doing/saying things to Mother Earth. There were a lot of " prayer-like " things that went on in the yoga I did and it made me uncomfortable. But, I suppose if I found an instructor that didn't do that, I wouldn't have minded it. But I still preferred the movements of Tai Chi. Jenn On Thu, Mar 24, 2011 at 2:00 PM, Dybowski wrote: > > > Has anyone done yoga? Guest guest
i remember that a lot of the pilates moves required laying on your back. I remember doing leg raises, hip raises and situps where you lifted both your top half and bottom half (like a 'v " ). I wouldn't be able to do any of those activities now. The yoga I did seemed a little easier on the body, as long as I didn't do the bend over stretching. I did kickboxing, and I think that is what finally did me in. I didn't know that I had a tethered cord then and in addition to kicking, we did a ton of squats and lunges where you touch the floor with your palm. I gotta say I miss the intense workouts. I'm sure once I get everything figured out with my back I'll find an appropriate excercise program. I'm just too beat up now to want to do too much. Subject: Yoga To: tetheredspinalcord Date: Friday, March 25, 2011, 1:37 PM  Hi Dee, Please forgive my memory or lack thereof: I can't recall if you have chronic pain or residual deficits from a tether. If you do - Pilates still helps? I've always wanted to try this type of exercise - actually for years I've wanted to do this and kick-boxing (yeah, I know kick boxing is out - couldn't do it physically even if I wanted to), but Pilates ... maybe? I have to be a bit careful because I'm not supposed to twist because of the intrathecal pump's catheter that winds from the back to the pump in the abdomen, but beyond that my only no-no's are not stretching the cord, etc. It's always looked like no matter what exercise you do with Pilates, you stretch you back though - false? Any help would be wonderful. Thanks - Kathy Yoga > > Has anyone done yoga? Guest guest
Gotta ask Jenn - Christians don't believe that the earth giveth? (Plants, food, etc.) Granted, I'm Catholic and was raised in the church during a time when Christian wasn't a buzz word. You were either Baptist, Catholic, Protestant, etc. I understand not praying to false deities and no other God, but does Yoga really require that you pray to the earth as a God or deity? I asked my neuro-rehab about Tai Chi when we discussed Yoga because it's always seemed so meditive. She said she really didn't think I could do it because it requires balance that I don't have and long standing times. She's never told me no before this: So far it's been yes with x and y modifications so I figured Tai Chi wasn't for me and I would try meditation which has been shown to have positive physical effects. It's interesting too because Tai Chi is also a debatable with Christians because of its roots with Taoism: http://www.religionandlife.com/2010/03/why-is-taitai-chi-class-banned-in.html http://www.mcs.ca/vitalspark/2040_therapies/520taic.html Surprisingly and very oddly, when I did a search to read the arguments against Christians practicing Yoga there were many more arguments against Christians practicing Tai Chi by Christian newsletters, blogs, and articles. Your post is the first time I've heard someone say their religious beliefs caused them to leave a form of exercise that is now mainstream. I find it very interesting how these arguments for and against an exercise that helps so many people abound. The Catholic church also showed in my search with some churches stating their parishioners should not practice Tai Chi - shock to me; lots of no-no's within this religion, but I had never heard that one before. I'll have to see what they say (at Yoga class) when I attend ... Kathy Re: Yoga , I have done chair yoga and Tai Chi. I preferred the Tai Chi. Guest guest
I've done yoga and hated it. Though I must say, there was no prayer aspect to it. Not every type of yoga is the same. Why did I hate it? It was all stretches, which I'm bad at and the instructor was like " What do you mean, your body doesn't do that? " He didn't get the limitations. Plus it's slow. I like faster exercise. Yoga takes too long. ________________________________ To: tetheredspinalcord Sent: Fri, March 25, 2011 1:44:52 PM Subject: Yoga I can tell you what she told me to avoid/not do: No stretching that would involve my back (which pretty much means no stretching when you think about the mechanics of stretching), I have to be careful of one leg because my brain doesn't tell me I've moved it beyond my ability or too far out of place (it can be moved in any direction and as far as the tendons/muscles will allow - my brain just doesn't signal to tell me that I've moved it too far out of place), but beyond that (and being mindful that I have the intrathecal pump which brings in other movement issues but wouldn't impact you), I can do what doesn't hurt. If it's a good studio with well-trained staff they will offer modified yoga classes/movements. I was upfront with the studio about my limitations expecting to get a reply saying no way. The opposite happened though. They sent me an email with the staffs' training, what they could offer and that I could take any class I wanted and they would modify. Easy cheezy as our granddaughter says! As I mentioned, they Yoga studio has " chair yoga " , but when I pressed the instructor about this class, I found out the majority if not all students are senior citizens. No prejudice, but it would be nice to join a class where I can also meet people near my age (I'm getting close to this population, but not there yet!). Kathy Yoga Has anyone done yoga? Guest guest
I've enjoyed both pilates and yoga in the past but simply do not have the strength to do much of either anymore. I've been told not to do " extreme " stretches, but do not know how to get the excercise I need. I know that I am weaker and have tsc, but have not figured out how to live this condition.... > > > > Subject: Yoga > To: tetheredspinalcord > Date: Friday, March 25, 2011, 1:37 PM > > > Â > > > > Hi Dee, > > Please forgive my memory or lack thereof: I can't recall if you have chronic > pain or residual deficits from a tether. Guest guest
That is one advantage of Thai (yoga) massage is that it is passive on your part so doesnt require strength. Just have to make sure you get a good therapist that understands what is going on with you. Subject: Re: Yoga To: tetheredspinalcord Date: Friday, March 25, 2011, 10:37 PM  I've enjoyed both pilates and yoga in the past but simply do not have the strength to do much of either anymore.
