IN DISPATCH??? Or on this earth???? Goodness, I'm a few years further

into that 4th decade but I've only been dispatching since 1977! (And I

thought *I* teethed on a Plantronics headset!)

I'm just a rookie, been doing this 19 months now. I love every minute of

it. I think I have found my calling. We also use 10 codes. My personal

favorite is 10-45 (animal carcass at...), I use that one just to make our

guys have to look it up.

After 19 1/2 years, including 10 years as a trainer, 1 as a training

supervisor and 2 as a communications supervisor. I still love this job

because you see something new every day. I just interviewed and tested 22

apps for 1 position and only 12 passed the written. Some didn't even pass the

initial interview because they had pending criminal cases. Why in the world

would anyone come to the PD to apply for a job there ESPECIALLY when thats

the agency that holds the criminal case. I was really dumbfounded but

then..................this is dispatch and every day brings something

different.

I've been here for going on 12 years. People here

think that's a really long time, but after reading

this list, I'm just a baby.

I had 14 1/2 years in Dispatch - 7 as a Supervisor. Someone else said it,

I think it was Frieda....Dispatch is easy, it's the supervising that

bites. That was also true for me. But really, the hours is what finally

kicked my butt. Or was it the administration? Being shorthanded? Feeling

like a burr on my director's backside? The lack of technological

advances? Lack of training offerings? It was a combination of all of

these.

I felt burn out one time and that was right after a department move. I

worked 6 months hard labor getting everything moved and organized - and

that was just a result of the actual move! Doesn't count the number of

weeks spend planning the silly thing! Once everything got organized, I

took an on-duty sabatical for a few months. I went to work, but only did

what was required - nothing extra. Took me a couple of years to get a

jumpstart on my motivation, and I was never back up to my pre-move level.

4 months ago I got a " normal " job with normal hours. Last night my husband

told me that he had two out-of-town conferences scheduled for the next

week. I shrugged my shoulders and said " okay " . Previously, I would have

panicked about my work schedule and " what do I do with my daughter if I

have to work while you are gone " ! It took me a bit to realize that I

wasn't even concerned about my work schedule. It took 4 months, but I

think I'm finally there - stress free! Yeah!

I always liked dispatching. I miss the interaction I had with the people

on the phone and the officers. I can't say that I would have stayed longer

if I was dispatching. I actually would have changed jobs long ago if I had

to dispatch. And that was because of the hours - not the job. As a

supervisor, more stresses are placed upon you. Sometimes they just get to

be too much for too long.
