I have it, but others who also have it from this group can give you more info than I

Mycobacterium

After having my cat scan today, I seened the Doctor and he said I have mycobacterium in my lungs. We did a spetum today and I have to mail in two more. Has anyone else ever been told this or treated for it?? It sounds pretty serious to me. Joy L from Wisconsin.

Joan I have mycrobacterial disease. It was diagnosed about 5 months ago. I take 3

antibiotics daily to treat it and have to take them for a year or more. I have severe shortness of breath, fatigue, and a bad cough. Everyone has different symptoms with this disease. You need 3 positive sputum specimens to diagnose this disease as active. If not active I don't think it is treated. Go to Google and look up NTM disease and you will learn everything you want to know.I also have bronchiectasis so its hard to know what is bothering me. I also bring up a lot of mucus. Good luck June KTo: bronchiectasis Sent: Sat, January 22, 2011 8:29:55 AMSubject: Re: Mycobacterium

actually this was in response to linden2joy. am hooping she got it. I could not handle the side effects of the 3 antis, and so prob still active and has been for the last, maybe 5 years. am not sure my breathing probs, fatigue and cough are from it or from bromc. have some really good spells, and then there are the others.

Thank you so much for replying to my post about Mycobacterium. I have been with this group for years but never posted much. I always try to read what others are going through and how they are treating it. I feel very guilty that I haven't given the support to the people on this site that I should of. Why does it take something to scare a person before they reach out for help?? I needed all the support I could get. I was shown the cat scan and we compared it to a scan I had a couple years ago. It looked awful. The Doctor told me if I needed to be treated for this I wasn't going to like him so well. I have two more sputum's to send in and then sit and wait for a month. I have had bronchiectasis for twelve years. I had a lobe removed from my right lung four years ago. It seems like

it's been a struggle since then. I have been bouncing back and forth the last six months on different medicines and hospital stays. I just couldn't get back on my feet. I had many chest ex-rays and it showed nothing.

I am scared of what lies ahead of me. I am turning 67 this year and I asked my Doctor if this disease keeps getting worse as we age. His res-ponce was don't get old. I asked if he would write a prescription for that. We both just grinned. I am lucky to have such a wonderful Doctor. Thanks for the support you have given me. I am still very worried about it. I have shed many tears. I thank God for this web site because very few understand what your going through that doesn't have it.

Dear Joan-I don't write that often either altho I have been with the group for a few years. I am always grateful for the help that other members give me. This is a great group. If you are worried about growing old and getting worse with this bacterial disease, do not worry. I have had this disease for about 5 months and I am 85 years old. I am trying to get better by taking my 3 antibiotics daily. I also try to do breathing exercises because my breathing is not good. I also walk around the house for 10 minutes minutes daily three times a day. I went for a cat scan the other day and so ventured out to lunch with my husband. I found out that I can do more than I thought. My husband does all

the cooking and housework but I try to do as much as I can, which I must admit isn't much. I am sure I can get much better when the medicine takes hold. The best thing to do is stay positive in your thinking and do everything you can to help yourself get well. Don't be scared just do everything you can to help yourself. You have been thru a lot and you can do this too. Love June KTo: bronchiectasis Cc: June Fraser Sent: Sat, January 22, 2011 1:16:50 PMSubject: Re: Mycobacterium

June thank you so much for the support it always helps to have someone who understands what your going through. I am working on staying positive. I know being positive helps us

I will try and keep in contact with you to see how your doing. I hope your medicine starts working and you get feeling better. Glad to hear your husband helps you a lot. I do have a person that comes in and cleans twice a month, I am getting much slower at getting things done. Thanks again for your support and such a positive message. Joy L
