Guest guest
Jan, Sorry it took so long to answer this but it reminded me of the day I went in to feed Mom toward the end. I hadn't intend to go in that day. I found a NURSE pouring milk down Mom's throat and making her close her mouth and swallow. Mom never drank milk at all! And it was shortly after that she was getting food and drink in her lungs. So I do know you you mean. She had been at the NH over a year so they should have known and she never got milk on her tray because I knew she didn't drink it. You have been so careful with Jim and kept him so healthy. I think they really need to train some of these health people a lot more than they do. Hope Jim is doing ok. Hugs, Donna R Cared for Mom 3 years in my home and the last year at a nh. She passed away from LBD in 2002. Jim Yesterday, the nurse at the nursing home forgot to thicken the liquid she puts Jim's medication in, so he can drink it and he started choking. He couldn't stop, he aspirated the liquid. He had panic in his eyes. He couldn't catch his breath. He is on honey thick liquids now. He has oxygen in his room that he uses mostly at night, but I put that on him and he gradually stopped the spasms of gasping for air. He is at a stage now where he is afraid to swallow and holds his food and drink in his mouth. I think he is afraid what the nurses are giving him, because he will eat and drink for me. I am not there all the time, but for several hours from dinner on. I am wondering if they just don't pay attention to thickening his liquids and are giving him things he can not swallow. I watched a nurse just pour a drink into his mouth and not give him a chance to swallow a little at a time. I think it scares him. I can see Jim progressing faster now. He is in the last stage and I am dreading every minute of it. Jim just got over bad congestion and they had an X-ray done and he didn't have Pneumonia thankfully. I am hoping this nurse did not give him Aspiration Pneumonia now. Last time at the hospital when he had Aspiration Pneumonia, the nurse said they would not treat it next time, because it is not a cure, since he will be getting it more and more. If they treat it, it would be just a fix until the next time. Thankfully, they are still treating his UTIs, because he just had another one. Everyday I feel like I am sitting on needles now. Jan Colello husband Jim dx w/LBD 2003, but had itsince 2000 when it actually showed up San Francisco Bay Area, CA
