Lots of discussion about pain medication, especially narcotics.

I have to say I have had a LONG conversation with my physician about this. One

thing that is missing in our conversation. There is a huge difference between

someone having surgery and is given Oxy for SHORT term use, vs. someone using

pain meds in the long term.

If you notice most addiction comes from short term strong narcotic use vs.

people using narcotics appropriate for long term use eg. extended release etc.

People get hooked by using the medication when the pain goes away or not

following the directions.

If you are in long term treatment there is a HUGE difference in how you are

monitored etc. I have my pills counted, take a drug test, can only fill on

certain days etc. That is a huge difference. You are not going from doc to

doc complaining about some short term issue that you have and loading up on

meds.

I find it ridiculous that people with long term pain are put into some

strange category. I take morphine daily and there is no " high " for me. The only

thing that happens is that I start to feel pain when I don't take the meds. They

should be available for patients when they need them, and there should be no

judgment. Just normal protocols.

We are all adults here, as long as we follow directions, keep appointments etc,

WE should be making the choice, not anyone else.

My rant :)
