Guest guest
Don't know if this would help but it's been talked about before on this site. Here is a recent article on Dr Mercola regarding d-mannose -- a natural supplement that is suppose to work better than cranberry juice. With regard to probiotics, make sure you are taking a professional brand -- some just off the shelf from a health food store are not that good. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/04/20/a-simple-natural-t\ reatment-for-urinary-tract-health.aspx Hopefully others will chime in with other ideas. I have had the same UTI for going on 3 yrs in Sept. I had my kidney taken out in Dec and the dr's thought this won't total get rid of the infections but they are still here. I have tried drinking apple cidar vingar mother, taking probotics, and cranberry pills nothing helps. The antibotics will not get rid of it I am ammune to them I think yet the dr's keep prescribing them. Can anyoen tell me how to get rid of them thanks, Pam
Guest guest
Extended UTIs suck. I had one all summer. When I went back to my uro (my PCP had been treating them), he ordered an u/s and found I had reflux in my right kidney - the reason the infections wouldn't clear. My next door neighbor has had a long UTI that won't clear and cultures resistant to almost every antibiotic. He just finished a long course of Tobramyacin (sp?) that he had to go to the hospital daily for an infusion. Don't know if it has worked yet. He has also done Vancomyacin and some other heavy hitters. It is just a matter of doing a C & S and seeing what it doesn't culture resistant to and taking it. If you have reflux, that can also make the infection stick around even w/antibiotics and you have to fix the reflux first. I can't imagine a UTI that cultures resistant to EVERY antibiotic on the market. Tobramyacin is an old one w/a lot of side effects that is not commonly used, but the common ones cultured resistant to, so this was the last option in trying to get it cleared. I tried Mannose-D and it didn't do diddily. Also tried cranberry pills, juice and tea - nothing. Also tried the supplements that my friend swears by - " Kidney Cleanse " and they didn't do anything. Not until I got my reflux under control was I able to clear the UTI. Guest guest
I do have reflux. How did you get your reflux under control? My specialist says that you can do a bladder augmentation but not sure what it's for would that be for the reflux? Did you have to have a augmentation. I am going to the dr probably tomorrow I will ask about those antibotics . thanks, Pam > > > Hi everyone I asked this question before but, wanted to see if maybe I > could get someone who has this problem or has had it to help me. Guest guest
The bladder aug is pretty radical - especially as a first line. I originally took Ditropan XL. When that went generic, insurance no longer covered the brand and I changed to the generic. That didn't work. Might as well have been taking a sugar pill. Turns out, the medication went off patent, but the time release mechanism did not. The time release mechanism in the generic is not as consistent or reliable. So, I switched to plain old generic Ditropan (oxybutinyn) and was successful with that for about the last 5 years or so (since whenever Ditropan XL went off patent). Then I got the UTI in the summer that would not go away and they found the reflux was the cause. Apparently 5mg of oxybutinyn @ night was not enough to keep my bladder pressures under control. They changed me to Gelnique. Gelnique is oxybutinyn gel that lasts 24 hrs. Within a week, my kidney pain was gone. But came back intermittently. I went back and told him and he has ordered an abdominal CT and new urodynamic study to see how high the pressures in my bladder really are. But, the kidney pain is only intermittent and not as severe as it was, so the new med is helping keep my bladder pressures down. I guess I'll find out how high they are in 2 weeks when I have the new urodynamic study. But, when I went back to his office last week when the pain returned, my urine looked better than it ever has since I've been seeing him (almost 10 years). The way to correct the reflux is to get the bladder pressures down. There are lots of different meds on the market - just trial and error. If none of those work, then maybe surgery. I suppose you would also need a recent urodynamic study to see exactly how high the bladder pressure is and how much they need to lower it to get it under control. Jenn > > > I do have reflux. Guest guest
I have done the urodynamics studying. I am having botox injections in my bladder now to help control my urgency and help with the pressure. It doesn't feel like it is working very good. The first one seemed to help but I have had about 3 others after that I think and I can't tell much differents. I feel good when the infection is being treated even if it doesn't go away but after I get off the meds I feel horrible again sometimes even on the meds I feel bad. I have tried ditroman and oxybutin didn't do a thing for me. > > > > > > > Hi everyone I asked this question before but, wanted to see if maybe I > > could get someone who has this problem or has had it to help me. Guest guest
Haven't tried the Botox, but I was the same way - great on antibiotics, but as soon as they stopped, w/in a couple days, I was right back where I started. If Ditropan/oxybutinyn orally didn't help, you could still try the Gelnique or Oxytrol (patches). They are a 24 hr dose and I think that helps with the up/down levels with more frequent dosing. There are also a lot of other meds that you can try - Enablex (and Enablex LA), Vesicare, Toviaz, Sanctura... might be others, not sure. Like finding the right med for neuropathy, bladder meds are the same - trial and error. While how you feel is important, how it actually effects the pressure in the bladder is more important (as far as controlling the reflux). So, while a med may not have noticeable effects, it may be successfully lowering the pressure in the bladder. At least that would fix one of the problems. And the last thing you want is to damage your kidneys or have a ureter detach w/uncontrolled reflux. I have a feeling that you're in a similar boat as me - the UTI isn't going to go away until you get the reflux under control. Jenn > > > I have done the urodynamics studying.
