I've seen manitol on the labels of "sugarless" gums, too. It's interesting to hear about your hospital experiences in Australia, Thereza. Hope you and your animal friends are doing well now :).

Kay Re: nebulised drug - Pulmozyme

I use Empire Blue Cross for health insurance and pay US$1,500/month premium for individual coverage. Co-pay for a big box of pulmozyme is $5. No problem whatsoever to get it.On the other hand, am also currently undergoing chemo for CLL/leukemia. Cost is $33,000/week but my co-pay is $10.

Thanks Alan,

Best of luck with your leukemia treatment. Is Empire in the Northeast U.S.? I'm in CA and we pay $1568 per mo. to Anthem Blue Cross and have $4,000 deductibles, each, per yr. Not good insurance, that's for sure.

I guess we all need to start chewing the gum with Mannitol.......I'll get some for sure. I am not going to participate in the Mannitol study at Mayo, but if there are any people in WI, MN that are close to Rochester and might be interested in the study you can call 1- for Aksamit. He is the principal investigator for this study or I talked with Hammel the study coordinator @ . They will pay you $900 at the end of the study. They are also doing this study in UK,Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Belgium, Netherlands & Argentina. I am anxious to see my local Dr. in May to ask him if I can try hypertonic saline.......it seems most everyone has tried it, or is on it so I am hoping it will thin the mucus for me. I

have found the Ipratropium Bromide/Albuterol Sulfate opens up my airways but the mucus does not seem to come out any easier. As you all know, very hard work!

The chewing gum is called Airways & Eclipse. I don't know if it is available in the US. A few years ago someone on the group looked into it & it wasn't available.

I have bought Eclipse here in Texas. It is manufactured in my home state of Illinois. As I recall when I contacted them previously, they are located in Peoria, Illinois. The company home is in Chicago where two of my three children live. I will check on the availability of Airways.

I wondered myself how the very small amount of manitol in a stick of gum would be able to have an effect on one's lungs? Never know, though. Did you say you think it helps your breathing to chew this gum, or it helps get mucus up?

I am looking fwd to asking my son's pulm dr @ Mayo in early May. So let meget this right: there are studies, being done worldwide, and including Mayowhere they are testing this Mannitol as a treatment for Bronchiectasis oror for all lung diseases? And there are apparently different forms of thismannitol, since they surely don't put the same type in chewing gum asthese doctors are apparently interested in calling a treatment forpulmonology issues? This is very exciting if it is possible for usto get an 'approved' med for bronchiectasis. I always say thatthese sports stars that earn $$Millions$$ for a few years ofplay, and these medical researchers that fight for every $$they get for more studies, should switch incomes. I tried to call their Peoria office today, but it was closed due to the Easter holidays. Our son in Chicago lives near Wrigley Field and worked across the street from the Wrigley Building before their office moved to ton.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the tip on the gum. I plan to find some today and try it. I have been really congested lately in my sinuses and lungs because I ate a lot of baked goods with gluten. That seems to trigger mucous in me. Also it is allergy season and I am always congested then.

Thank goodness for my vest which I asked my doctor for after reading your information about it online. I am also going to ask for the saline for my nebulizer next time I see him.

I follow all you have to say but rarely respond. Maybe, I don't follow the protocol for such a group, but when I do respond no one answers back. Therefore, I usually just read comments which are very helpful. Thank you again for the great information.

Cindi..If you are that congested, maybe try calling you doc and see if he can call in a script for Hypo-Tonic Saline. One thing about it: You alsohave to do 2 puffs of Albuterol / Xopenex. about 10mins priorto doing the Saline. I have my son do the 2 puffs of Xopenexthen have him do his vest, then the nebulizer. I think that givesthe Xopenex time to open up his airways, so the saline is eventhat much more effective. The doc should do both scriptsautomatically. If he/she has ever been educated on thisHypoTonic Saline, he/she will know that you need bothscripts.I think you will find quick relief from all of your congestion.I believe it took about 1-2 weeks for my son to havea positive reaction to it. It is $55 for me to be a self-pay at the CF Pharmacy where I get

the med. My inswill cover $20 of it, so now I pay $35, which is alwayswelcome, a little savings, I mean!Best wishes, ! e

I'm so sorry no-one has replied to you!! Sometimes it seems to

happen - things get really quiet at time, no-one writing, then times

like now when lots people posting. I find then I can only respond to

the ones that do relate to me more so...

But do keep looking in, I don't think there's any rules against that,

I've heard there are many so-called 'lurkers' who don't write in

often & that's fine.

but don't give up hope, I'm sure it wasn't intentional not to reply

to you - maybe no-one knew an answer to give you perhaps!!

Hi Joy,

Thank you for sharing that. I truly have learned a lot from just from reading the emails and tips that members give. I just have never been much of a technological person and wondered if I was breaching protocol in some way. If I am not, than I am sure it is because no one had anything to add to my comments. Thanks again.

Norma - thanks for the information on the Wrigley Eclispe gum. I have not purchased any yet - it seems when I get out, I forget. Will make a note to get it the next time I am out.

I had a very interesting conversation today with the manager of our American Homepatient mgr. I had to get a new Acapella and he called to tell me it was in and I went to pick it up. He's a real chatty guy and was a male nurse in the operating room before he became mgr. of the home health care place. He knows quite a bit about bronch. and is always interested in what I am doing with the disease. He is the one that got me started with the nebulizer. Anyway, he asked if I had ever heard of Flimm Fighter Percussor. I had not heard of it. He used it on me. You can google it to see what it looks like.... it basically does the same thing as the Vest but is a small hand held appliance you use on your chest exactly where you want to loosen the mucus and it vibrates very strongly. I was wondering if any of you have used it?
