, mine was around 65k for surgery and recovery. But I'm sure it varies.

You want to budget for PT and MRI's after surgery also.

*.*

*My sons detethering and hospital bill cost $89,000. BUT, he had a

complication of a prolonged spinal fluid leak at the incision, and we were

in the hospital for 21 days. I do not believe that is the " typical " cost,

but there can be complications with any surgery. ( insurance paid for all

but $2,000) I think there may have been a separate anesthesiologist bill

too, but not sure how much that was.*

Hi ...we were fabulously lucky and our insurance covered each of my

daughter's surgeries .. for one, we may have had a $2000 charge..the others

were paid in full. Randee

I had combined tethered cord release and stenosis decompression.  The

neurosurgeon charged around $20K, the anasthesiologist charged separately, the

assistant surgeon charged separately, intraoperative neuro testing was $1600, &

the hospital billed over $200K for my 8 days in acute care, then another $100K

for 12 days in inpatient rehab.  I developed a hemotoma which required a 2nd

surgery (another $18K) & longer stay in acute care, then in rehab.  This is

likely not typical.  I am on Medicare (because I'm old) and providers routinely

inflate charges because Medicare is stingy with reimbursements.  I also live in

Southern California & had my surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center - both

excuses to overcharge.

, bless your heart, what an ordeal! thanks all for feedback, I just didn't

know and the info you shared helped. We do have to pay 10% of inpatient costs

so good to know what to expect, 10,000 maybe, depending on how involved. Thanks.

,

Your co-insurance may be 10%, but most policies have a max out of pocket,

capping your out of pocket expenses. Most are under $10K. I have Medicare

and have a Medicare Advantage plan (my Mcare benefits are administered by a

private insurance company - get more benefits for lower price. The company

actually refunds me $40/month of my Part B premium + vision and dental

benefits). But the plan I picked for 2011 has a higher max OOP than I've

ever had in previous years - $6700 (don't remember exactly - more than $6K,

less than $7K). But most of them have a max OOP of around $3400. When I had

private insurance or COBRA from my employer, my max OOP was only around

$2500/yr. Check your policy.

my bills are rolling in.....  looks like the dr and hospital billing will be

about $80k, probably getting about $30K from my insurance..... I do have a

co-insurance cap however so hopefully I won't be paying much more than $2-$3k.

:

What I neglected to mention is that I paid ZERO for all those charges

thanks

to Medicare and my AARP supplemental insurance.  Still, 10% of even half of

what

was billed for my surgery etc. could be a big number.

I live in the L.A. area and my Dr. is at USC. And hospitals DO overcharge. I had

my surgery at University Hospital and my bill was $40,000...almost 17 years ago!

The insurance co. questioned it, asking my permission to look into the charges

and I agreed. As a result, the hospital took off $10,000.

>I also live in Southern California & had my surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical

Center - both excuses to overcharge.
