Guest guest
So I'm in a recovery group and using my ACT skills full on these days. I share some of my suffering with others as it relates to my driving like no-one else is using the road I'm on. At the end of the meeting a very nice person asks me for a ride home, tells me it's only a few minutes away. I say yes of course. As we get into my car she tells me more about where she lives..she starts to give me directions and adds-- as though almost to apologize and/or help justify/rationalize: " Just think of it as helping others " . " Oh. I look at is being a human being " I say. " Really, I mean it. It's a pleasure..I remember folks carting me around years ago. I mean, really. I share this today because this " helping others " thing has stood as a huge should in my life until I came onto ACT. I truly had no idea difference between what resonates and being a good girl..or I did and mixed the two up along the way. Some hold this like their life depends on it, this helping others. Well, maybe it does. But I am free today to more readily access that choice to say yes or no and that's a very good thing. It is not about tallying up the helping others. It is really not. It's about being a human being. P.S. I got lost on my way home, called her and we had a nice chat as she directed me out of the hilly area. A beautiful view and a new mastery of the area and a new friend..all mine.
Guest guest
What a lovely story. You were surprised at how much the request entailed, which you were not prepared for, but you were prepared to be a full human being. How wonderful! Guest guest
Helping others transformed to enjoying being human. What a lovely perspective. I’m putting that one in my tool kit. Best, Robyn
Guest guest
I don't know what happened but it sure seems to me this life of mine is about the Be-Ing Human and not so much about talking about it, describing, reasoning. And I would have never recognized the difference before ACT. Or I did, but pushed it aside like an afterthought. I've never appreciated this knowing without reason so fully as I do today. This person did me a huge favor by saying this to me after I had quite naturally said yes to her request for help. > > > > What a lovely story. You were surprised at how much the request entailed, which you were not prepared for, but you were prepared to be a full human being. How wonderful! > > > > Helena > > > > Helping Others > >  > > > > > So I'm in a recovery group and using my ACT skills full on these days. > I share some of my suffering with others as it relates to my driving like no-one else is using the road I'm on.
