hi Kistine,

not sure what " hydro " (= water) " tonic " (= tonicity of water)

means... water same as water... Could be meaning iso-tonic which

would be 0.9%, is = same. IE is same as the body's salinity.

Usually little effect for nebs

Some of us use HYPER (= greater than) tonic from 3 - 6 or %. IE

saline tonicity higher than the body. Usually more effective BUT

start of 3%, work up to highest that is best effectiveness. Have

glass of water on hand, the salt can cause a bit of coughing fit to

start with (bronchospasm).

Sorry this is rushed, have to dash, - but discuss with your doctor.

hi Kistine,

I have been using Sodium Chloride 0.9%, 2 times a day for years with no side effects. I wouldn't be without it.

Hope this helps.EILEEN

Eileen, (and any others interested!)

I seem to recall you also said they weren't greatly effective - have

to tried to increase the % - say 3% to start with. You might find it

will help shift sticky mucous more quickly and effectively... worth

a try. Just start slowly with a glass of water on hand, stop as soon

you feel a 'tickle' or 'catch' in your throat, have a sip of water,

see if you need to cough, (huff first) then continue...

cheers,

Joy

Hi Joy,

They don't make the higher % here in the US, I have tried to get it and the pharmacies do not carry it.EILEEN

OK! Yes I do believe you are right, Joy, it is Hyper tonic Saline. I think they are planning to start my son out at the lower-- 3%-- dosage first. This biz of not being able to get ahigher dose in U.S. scares me. Mayo Clinic called in a script today to start my son on it but it wasn't ready before the pharmacy closed :-(... Just one more thing. Interesting that it can be found at RitaAid. We don't have any RiteAids here in Orlando, FL but I see them often when I travel domestically, in California, in particular.I have not heard back from my senator as of yet, but I did fax all of my son's info to his office and I know he had to return to Washington, D.C. for some budget thing. So hopefully his staff can forcibly convince United HealthCare on behalf of the senator! I am quite hopeful that this

time will be different, tho nothing else has been successful. We just got Sam's report card- he made the honor roll! I hope he decides to become a dr and find a certain cure for this disease. Oh Geez there's his cough again! Will Hyper tonic saline help w/ that?? Thx Guys! eSubject: Re: hydrotonic nebsTo: bronchiectasis Date: Monday, February 14, 2011, 7:47 PM

Eileen, I'm in the US and I have no trouble getting the 7% HyperSal at my local RiteAid pharmacy.

can you get the HyperSal that Suzanne uses (assuming Suzanne is in

US...?) Haven't heard of it here. I fortunately get it from my

hospital with the salts, and water separately so can mix to % desired.

hi Kistine,

in answer to - " Oh Geez there's his cough again! Will Hyper tonic

saline help w/ that?? " Yes I really believe so. It's the gunk in

the lungs, blocking free airway movement that causes the cough

response - the saline I found so soothing (like the taste of sea) and

loosens and dilutes the thickness so it's so much easier. For a

young lad 3% will probably work just fine, stronger may be too much

and freak him out?

Even tho we have a 'national' health care there are great differences

just in where you live - obviously a regional small town has much

less than cities. Even tho our govt keeps telling us we have a equal

opportunity the reality isn't necessarily so, so I understand your

frustration. But see how Sam goes on 3%, I really think it's make

him more comfortable. It's a natural drawing agent, easy to use....

all the right things going for it.

and congrats to the lad - making the honour roll with a disease that

really can knock the socks of you, and set things back at school.

Fabulous, well done! I know how much trouble I had at school, I

missed so much.... I'm soooo pleased for your and him!! have a

champs on me!

cheers

Hello Sussie!

This med is actually called Hypo tonic Saline. Its administered through a nebulizer machine, as my 8yr old son calls it, "Do I have to do my breather?" Unfortunately, the answer is most often "Yes." My son used Pulozyme in the nebulizer for over 2 years and it worked perfectly for him. Then I had to put him onto my employer-provided health insurance, United Health Care, and the Ceo refused to pay for it. I love Capitalism!

\Pulmozyme is $2300 per month and this Hypo tonic Saline is $55 per month. Obviously we are not putting a price on our son's health, but Mayo Clinic thinks that this Hypo tonic Saline will work almost as well. Pulmozyme is a medicine with live enzymes that actually attack the DNA of the mucous, so that mucous is not made anymore. Exactly what my son needs. This Hypo tonic Saline just allows the mucous to be cleared more easily. Lots more coughing.
