I just read the recent report and it sounds rather challenging with some

warnings to not go out unless necessary.

Lou - An ACBS special interest group is working making more local seminars available to the public. Also the group will be developing ways to help the seminar attendees form local support groups. I'm green with envy. Is there anyone else who gets frustrated by the lack of opportunity to hear these ACT people speak? I mean who has the odd $200 - $400 to spend on such self-indulgence. The ACT people were offing a scholarship to help pay for one of the conferences and I wanted to put my hat in the ring but I wasn't eligible, not a student. Another time, I was told, "Sorry, that event is only for professionals". These ACT workshops seems to be geared towards exclusivity. Lou,

The price and limited local access and only students discounts for places like

World Con are a bit frustrating for me but I have lots of expectations and

demands. The cost of the experiential workshops is worth every penny and then

some and yet my discretionary spending is on a very tight leash these days. ACT

is still rather new, relatively speaking. And trained, skilled seminarians are

even fewer. Thank goodness for this forum, ACBS goodies, and the workbooks that

keep coming out.

oh, sorry, didn't see this as I was typing my last reply. There are things I

think we can do more in our practice even here.. more specific stuff..such as

maybe pick an exercise from one of the workbooks and practice it and then report

back with our experience. I'm willing to do that a bit more.

Things I learned today;

The news sure does like to blow things out of proportion (while I knew this

before!) The main roads were fine this morning and the conference was moved back

to a starting time of 10 AM which helped.

This morning while driving to the conference, I was noticing I was thinking I

was going to feel out of place because; most attendees were students or

therapist (my main exposure to ACT is from a client perspective), the event is

being help at a Buddhist Inspired school (I am Christian) and I have NEVER done

yoga before. And I also noticed I was excited to be able to learn and do ACT!

What I learned was that we all are the same (no matter our role or experience in

life) and acceptance can be thought of as something that you do with your life

that allows us to travel where we want to go.

I returned home to and flipped on the movie channel to find the movie Gandhi on

and to hear Gandhi say " I am a Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim, and a Jew. " A

fitting end to the day.

Thank you for those who replied what a treat it would be for them to see some of

the ACT " gurus " speak. I will remember this as I listen to on Saturday and

I will thank him.

I also realize that such a workshop is out of reach for many. There are tools we

ourselves can use through this Listserv, I remember a few months ago someone did

a few Skype sessions. I think it's often hard if one person shoulders the entire

burden, so perhaps a group effort is best! I'm looking forward to Bill's efforts

to bring ACT to the public.

We did a very cool exercise today; I will ask tomorrow if I can share it

here.

Blessings!

Well, this is very interesting. I had no idea you've been this busy with the

exercises! And your recent sharing about substance abuse didn't include anything

about " join the dots " exercise. Or maybe it did and I missed it. Is there more

there about that you care to talk about? That's sort of the kind of thing I'm

talking about. Like what specifically is helping you today with that exercise

or with others that helps you with substance abuse issues?

But, yeah, to hear some trained ACTers speak with (and not to) is fantastic,

transformational. And to be in the room with others suffering, getting real,

doing work and sharing is the most amazing experience for me. It has carried me

far far beyond the weekend alone. The intimate connected compassionate present

vulnerable space is where it's at for sure. And looking to create more of that

sort of thing where-ever I may be.

kind regards,

terry
