I was invited to go to Vegas in Sept. (I'm in L.A.) and I really want to go. I

saw the pain Dr. yesterday and asked if a cortizone shot would work in the

short-term (weekend) so I could go. He said yes but discouraged me, saying it

could cause 'permanent damage'. I had 2 shots in college due to throwing my back

out and I never had any problems. He prescribed MS-Contin and I go back in a

month. What are your thoughts?

Cortisone shot where? The docs are against the shots (some of them) because

they feel the steroids are not good for you. I am on pain meds around the

clock, and they help me more than the shots.

The pain docs are funny... some are more injection only, others are pain meds...

I have one doc that does the injections (buttocks trigger points every 2 months)

and another that prescribes the pain meds. In my experience seeing 30+

physicians before finding someone stable they are either for one or the other.

Is this like an epidural shot?? Or??

Kellie,

My knots and numbness in my arms got so bad I was tested for MS. My arm would go

numb for hours at a time etc.I went for massage, and to a rehabilitation center.

Took about 10 intense massage sessions to get the knots out in my back, and that

helped with the numbness a lot.

I would suggest you Google trigger points, it's possible you have them around

your eyes, and on your face. Typical ones are around your jaw bone. They mimic

TMJ/migraines- you may want to see if you have knots there. A few days of

massaging and you should be good. You do have to keep it up and take care of

that area every 3 days or so. Do you get a tingling sensation around your face?

Here is a link to what helped me:

(jaw/face)http://saveyourself.ca/articles/perfect-spots/spot-07-masseter.php

The problem is the trigger point can be in one spot, and the pain can refer from

there. Unfortunately with the knots it has been ongoing for me. They never

really go away for long.

Do you get them in the buttock area? Hips? I have them all over there, as well

as neck, top of head, around spine, around ribs, and legs. My legs and upper

back are the worst.

You mean an internist specializing in something like muscular disorders? My

docs/team are- neurosurgeon, pain management physicain, massage therapist (I

go occasionally as they can aggravate), Internist specializing in

rehabilitation... (he actually trained under my NS a long time ago).

Let me know if you have any questions. I know the trigger point stuff seems a

bit simple, but honestly taking care of some of them helped me a lot. Check if

you have any on your forearm! That would tie into arm numbness. And remember the

pain is not necessarily where the trigger point is!

Feel free to e-mail me directly too :)

Have you had your post surgical follow up? What do they think about your pain?

Does your pain doc know all about TC?

Sorry it's taken me SO long to get back to you. The Cortisone shot was just kind

of a general question. I just remember the shots in my back 20+ years ago...and

the immediate relief afterwards. I'm not thinking about the shots anymore. Nor

am I taking MS-Contin. Within 2 days (and just 2 pills) I felt like I had a

horrible flu and headache. I went back to Oxcarbazepine. It doesn't help much

but I get no horrible side effects. I see the Dr. later this month and I'm going

to ask him about Savella. He had mentioned it but prescribed the MS-Contin

instead.

Jenn,

I tend to think, totally based on my experience, that she would be better off

finding someone specializing in sensitization (someone who treats Fibro, if

her pain doc won't help) and someone treating myofascial pain.

Because this stops being a spinal cord thing, and essentially becomes another

disorder that you develop.

Some things that worked for me were as simple as massaging my jaw, but you have

to either research or go to someone who can teach you (myofascial

center/therapist) to take care of yourself.

I have met 30+ people now who have developed sensitization after some type of

surgery, or right before it if their pain was untreated.

Thanks, ! I have a big problem with light/noise sensitivity. I'm

definitely asking him about the Savella.

Jodi

>The Savella is approved for Fibro. It has helped with joint pain, light/noise

sensitivity. .. I have not had any side effects. If you have any of those issues

I would ask about it for sure.

I'm on Oxycontin now and Morphine IR.
