for me it's just rest and time....likely not what you want to hear right now.

Hope you feel better soon. I do know when my back has been flared up I worry it

will never get better, but eventually it always does for me. Lots of ice also

helps me but it's not for everyone. DeeTo: tetheredspinalcord

Anyone have any suggestions on how you can calm a major TC flareup (aside

from meds), even lying down is torture. Have waves of numbness going down legs,

is it even possible to get back to a tolerable level when it gets to this point?

I have get through summer for my kids.

I do the opposite- heat. I take a bath with Epsom salts, or use my heat pad that

produces wet heat. usually 15-20 minutes will do it for me (lying on

my stomach with heat wrap on both legs/lower back)

I also lie on my back and use a jump rope (anything like it) to lift my leg up,

one by one. I do it 5-10 times each leg, 2 x a day. It stretches the nerve in

your leg.

I also purchased an ultrasound machine ($50-$100), and use my TENS if needed.

You may want to try Valerian root as a natural alternative to relax muscles.

Hope you feel better soon.. and of course do rest a bit :)

my pt also told me about stretching the nerve...he said lay down and raise my

leg, bend it and put my hand behind my knee and lower and raise the lower part

of my

leg.   alternating heat and cold and some motrin help me too.

Thanks everyone. Was the leg raising OK to do before you had surgery?

Also, meds tend to make me sick, but I have to get through some things, what

pain med works the best with the least nausea?

- do you put the tens on your back or leg, did it help you before

surgery.

, I'm doing pretty good.  I just finished PT a couple of weeks ago and I'm

getting around pretty good.  I was able to walk the dogs and " play " tennis this

past Sunday with just a bit of residual pain and weakness.  When I did PT

prior to the surgery they tried to " move " my sciatic nerve by moving my leg but

that just caused more numbness and pain for me.  Prior to surgery the only meds

I took for TC pain and numbness was motrin, I usually took 3 at a time per

doctors orders.  I really have to say that as of right now, having the surgery

was the best thing for me.  I can sit now without having burning pain in my

back and I although I still have some weakness in my legs, I can walk longer

than before and have a quicker recovery after.  if I have any bad back muscle

" spasms " I take a valium before bed and usually wake up feeling much better....a

little trick I picked up from the surgeon.  I havent had to use my ankle brace

except for when I

played tennis, but I'm still very cautious when I'm walking because any uneven

surface can take me down.  I'm sorry your having such a difficult time right

now.  Have you see any doctors recently about your worsening symptoms?

Hi ,

So glad to hear you are doing well, sounds like you are pleased with your

surgeon. I can't remember did Wisoff end up doing it? I have been trying to

put things off so I have not done anything more with Drs., I did not realize how

quickly you can go downhill with this thing.

yes, dr wisoff did the surgery.  it is very scary how quickly symptoms can

progress, i feel like i was in a constant state of panic for the year prior to

having the surgery done, especially since both surgeons initially said that I

didn't need surgery.

When things get truly terrible I use the therapy pool at my health

club. I often just hang in the deeper end using a floatation device

and it seems to really help. Get out is murder, but often I take my

meds before I get in, float through the storm, and get out when the

worst is over. Again, make sure to use a flotation device, especially

if any of your meds make you tired!!!!
