Guest guest
,  Thank you so much for posting this. Unfortunately, I can't answer your question. I too have been looking for a telecommute position as I lost my job last month due to my health. I am having a hard time getting approved for unemployment.  If it were me, I wouldn't say anything unless it was going to impede your work efficiency.  I hope someone can weigh in on this.  Subject: changing jobs with TC To: " Tetheredspinalcord " <tetheredspinalcord > Date: Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 1:48 PM  I was wondering what the deal is when you change jobs with something like TC and a host of other issues (like narcolepsy etc) SHOULD you disclose your " disability " or not? I am looking for work from home...but some require 9-5 office time.Ps. to all of you looking for " work from home " . Guest guest
, I certainly wouldn't disclose it. Especially if it is not visible (my wheelchair kind of gives it away for me). and it would be illegal for a potential employer to ask in an interview. The last interview I went on, the employer spent about 45 min of the hour interview talking about my disability. I answered all his questions... Aside from the fact that I sit all day, there isn't much different from me and another candidate and since it was an office job it should be a non-issue since the job involves sitting on ones tush. It just caught me so off guard and I didn't want to be rude. It just seemed easier to answer. And since it was a MD (granted a psych), I got the impression he was genuinely interested. I think I didn't get the job because he didnt' want to deal with the potential hassels my disability could cause for him. I was more qualified and far more educated than the person he chose for the job. He just kept telling me that I could go make $100K/year with my degrees. I sure wish he would have told me where this infamous job was. I'll take it! Good luck on the job hunt. Work from home (legitimately) is hard to find. I would sure love a work from home job, but will settle for part time. Guest guest
Hi,Thanks so much.. I guess I was wondering because I don't know if it " counts " as a disability if not disclosed.I did read according to the ADA you have to be offered the job, and then disclose. I am starting my new job next week. My biggest issue has been dealing with my managers comments, and attitude towards illness. In their mind you have to " think positive " and then you should be fine! I also found out we were UNDER 15 employees, due to some reps we have.. so I had no protection at all. We want to have kids next year and I need to know I can take FMLA or short term disability and have a job! After I gave my notice today of course millions of promises were made on how things would change, but I don't believe in lies anymore. I'm sorry about your experience. 45 min?? You are a saint for answering all of those questions. I think the 100K jobs are still out there, but harder to find now.. I assume he was impressed by you and didn't want someone overqualified? Take care and thank you for sharing > ** > > > I was wondering what the deal is when you change jobs with something like > TC and a host of other issues (like narcolepsy etc) SHOULD you disclose your > " disability " or not?
