In this case, I had had an allergic reaction to Zithromax when given several

years ago - intense hives. In order for me to take this med, I had to be

de-sensitized to the drug - sort of the way allergy shots work, only this was

done all in one day (and it took an entire day!). They gave it to me in liquid

form, once an hour, increasing the dose each hour. I had to do this at a clinic

that had RN's and equipment to deal with anaphylactic shock, if it had occurred.

Fortunately, it went very smoothly, and I have had no further allergic reactions

to taking this drug 3 times weekly.

You are correct that the bacteria eventually builds up a resistance to the

antibiotic. I just hope this doesn't happen for a long time, as it is really

working well for me right now.

I wonder if this could be done with Cipro. My reaction to it involved hives and welts only. My brother died from anaphylactic shock from a penicillin shot when he was 23. Perhaps this is something I should discuss with my doctor.

Norma, I've heard it said that one can be de-sensitized to virtually anything.

I think I remember reading about desensitization for Cipro. I did a quick

Google and there were 2-3 peer-reviewed articles about the protocol.

I'm so sorry about your brother Norma. Two of my children are alergic to the penicillin family of drugs. So far I've had no reactions to drugs beyond topical triple sporins, but I do carry an Epi-Pen since I often have children with me.

Oh, thank you so much, Suzanne. I will check that out. I might also call my allergist. I have not been there for about six years when I finished my allergy shots.
