Mannitol is made from sugar cane. It is in some chewing gum in Australia that is for clearing the head & it also helps to clear the lungs a bit. It's made by Wrigleys.

Mannitol is also in Bronchitol which is inhaled & available in Australia. I haven't tried it yet but I think it has the same affect as hypertonic saline. Hypertonic saline is cheaper so I expect that is why it is used by patients at the hospital where I see my dr.

Keep well everyone. Theresa

Re: nebulised drug - Pulmozyme

I use Empire Blue Cross for health insurance and pay US$1,500/month premium for individual coverage. Co-pay for a big box of pulmozyme is $5. No problem whatsoever to get it.On the other hand, am also currently undergoing chemo for CLL/leukemia. Cost is $33,000/week but my co-pay is $10.

Thanks Alan,

Best of luck with your leukemia treatment. Is Empire in the Northeast U.S.? I'm in CA and we pay $1568 per mo. to Anthem Blue Cross and have $4,000 deductibles, each, per yr. Not good insurance, that's for sure.

Hi Joy,

I spoke with the study monitor on Monday. She received the meds list from my two pharmacies. She's looking for infection incidences per 'scripts ordered in at least two years. She needed at least four and I had three. As she went over the list with me on the phone, she saw the repeated order of Avalox and doxy monthly and questioned their use. I had to be honest with her and explain in that these are used for a preventive regimen to NOT BE SERIOUS issues. She said she'd get back with me but I don't think I'm going to meet their criteria. Oh, well.

I'm using the Bravo pH monitor now to analyze reflux. I go back this morning for them to download the results and see if I must do another 48 hours.

hi Annthere was a Mannitol study (double-blind) in Cairns about 2005 - was having so much trouble adapting to a new swag of meds that Doc advised not to worry about taking part in it. It's based on sugar cane - I think from memory ... so doesn't have a lot of the highly chemical meds we're usually givencheers, joy h
