do you have GERD, an acid reflux problem. can someone explain what this is for Hester? somehow it may go along with bronc.

Cramps

I know I have been very quiet but I read everything about our disease. My problem at the moment is chest pains. It is not inside the lungs. More on the outside around my ribcage. Sometimes I get cramps (I think) in the muscles around my ribs. Can this be true? My chest is also sore to the touch. What can be done about this and has anyone else experienced the same?

I handle the bronch quite good. Just when I get sick it is VERY sick and takes months to subside. What do you propose about doctors? Is it better to see a Pulmonologist than a Specialist Physician? I am on an inhaler called Foxpro and on Singular tablet once a day. Kept me going well for about 8 months until I fell ill around a month ago.

Kind regards

I think a pulmonologist is absolutely essential for ones help with this disease.

And preferably, one who treats many patients with Cystic Fibrosis. 95% of

patients with bronchiectasis have CF - our small group is very much in the

minority. But, because of this, a doctor who treats lots of CF patients is

going to be much more familiar with bronchiectasis than one who mainly sees COPD

patients.

We want to do treatments that PREVENT as much serious illness as possible,

because as you say, when it hits, it hits hard.

Hester, I've been treated for GERD for a number of years and now my gastro doc doesn't think it's that bad. But she believes some of my discomfort, like you, chest pain not related to my heart which they say is strong, is due to maybe spasms in the esophagus. Yesterday I had an esophageal motility test which wasn't pleasant but should address the GERD symptoms I've had plus other things going on with the esophagus. I'm am so hoping this will all finally address my discomfort in the mid chest area and additional coughing.

Hi Hester,

My physician didn't help one bit with this disease. It was only after I saw a pulmonologist that I was diagnosed properly and given sputum cultures to determine the correct antibiotic to use that I began to get better. That is my opinion, I am sure others have theirs.

Good luck,

hi Hester,

do you cough a lot? If so that could be part reason for ribcage

soreness - the muscles do fatigue, I know this from experience. If

you have coughing fits, or bouts of coughing Ventolin puffer (with

spacer is best) seems to help stop the spasm.

I'm not familiar with the meds you mention.

Is South Africa medical system similar to UK & other commonwealth

countries? In Australia the usual thing is have a general physician

and a referral to a specialist. US seem to have similar set up of a

Primary doctor for the more general health issues and a

pulmonologist. T

here definitely are times a specialist is needed. Many general

doctors know very little about bronch - tho maybe that's different in

Sth Africa? I have read that bronch is very prevalent in Africa -

but it's a big continent after all...

Hi All, I had GERD very bad. Had an operation to fix it. I don’t get reflux anymore. Been to my doctor yesterday. He says I have Fibromyalgia. As I understand it is an infection of the nerve points. Has anyone heard if it? I do not cough a lot however I have been sick for about 3 weeks. Coughing to try and get the mucus out. Here in South Africa we pay a lot for medical help. We have medical aids where you have to pay a certain amount of your salary per month. Also depends on what medical aid you use (there are so many of them). If you go over your budget you must pay yourself. Then we have the state hospitals that you can go to if you don’t have money. There you pay a small amount for treatment. But it is only for the very poor and the service are not so good at all. So, nothing for free. I have paid a lot of money for this illness. Please help me understand this Fibromyalgia?
