Guest guest
Hi : I wish you every best health; fight and win! I have to ask your understanding on a current thread. There has been and continues to be a religious theme to the conversations. I do not share these opinions and have left them alone for some time, but they seem to repeat and dominate the discussions. I am glad that people find comfort in religion, but that is not why I subscribe to this group. I guess I shall have to discontinue my subscription because I do not share those beliefs and it is not fair for those who do not have Christian beliefs for others to dominate the discussions. Bless them for their comforts, but we all have to find our own ways. Is this a Christian only group or are all of us welcome? lisa@... wrote: Hi all, As most of you know, I am the moderator of this group but have been only minimally active recently because of my breast cancer. Guest guest
Hi and Beverly, Beverly, I never meant to cause any problems. I started a discussion with a personal revelation from this past week and went from there. I will not continue discussing the current thread. Please accept my apologies, I am sorry. , I wish you all the best in your fight for your health. Welcome back. I apologize if I caused any problems for you. Guest guest
Oh, dear. As with any conversation, occasionally we go out of bounds -- and when that happens, you can bet I'll be in the thick of it. So sorry to have caused offense to you -- but please don't leave. I'm glad you spoke up -- perhaps next time one of us can just give a gentle reminder before it gets too far out of hand or something like that. And with being sick, it may take one of us to speak up when a thread offends. I've found the scroll handy, too.....But in any event, there's no need to leave -- you're a valuable member here. I think we should learn to speak up and get our voice heard -- something a lot of us weren't taught by our BPD parents. Why don't we just give a gentle reminder if the moderator doesn't catch it early? We can just course-correct and move on before taking the step of leaving, hopefully. It happens from time to time. Again, sorry to have offended you. -Kyla Hi all, > As most of you know, I am the moderator of this group but have been > only minimally active recently because of my breast cancer. Guest guest
hey guys...i have been checking out the religion thread because i thought it was so interesting that so many other members were atheists (like me). to me, the posts seemed uber-polite and since faith and religion are huge parts of some (probably most) peoples' lives (and also something that some moms used against their kids), i can't imagine religion NOT coming up on this board. there are religious themed topics, but i don't feel like religion really leaks too much into the " secular " posts which are the most common on the board. also, i think the topics are pretty well labeled. there will clearly be discussion of religion if " religion " or " spirituality " is in the thread. the only thing that bothered me about the thread was that people seemed almost embarrassed to express their views on their religion. why does the mere discussion of religion offend people so much? it's something i'll never understand. anyway, in summation, there were a lot of posts from christian points of view, but several posts were from members who are atheist or non- organized and everyone seemed polite and respectful. i personally don't feel antagonized for my beliefs on this board. ok, i'm butting out. bink Hi all, > > As most of you know, I am the moderator of this group but have > been > > only minimally active recently because of my breast cancer. Guest guest
bink, Thanks for your input. >there were a lot of posts from christian points > of view, but several posts were from members who are atheist or non- > organized and everyone seemed polite and respectful. i personally > don't feel antagonized for my beliefs on this board. I feel the same. Many of us here suffered spiritual abuse along with all the other types of abuse at the feet of our nada's and fada's. This is an important part of my healing too. should I just ignore it because it sets off issues for others? I sincerely believe that the things that 'rub us the wrong way' are the things that we need to look more closely at. Point in case. The person that regularly posts the hit and run comments of being ignored. This is her issue that she needs to deal with and instead of doing that she likes to do these " drive by " posts. We have all gotten tired of her posts and ignore them mostly so she is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Her story is no one listens to me. She posts in an antagonistic manner and drives people away. I feel horrible for this person that she does not see the forest for the trees. I really do not feel anyone was shoving their views down anyones throat. I feel everyone was very respectful and some of the people that communicated back and forth the best were Christian and Atheist. some expressed their recovery from spiritual abuse from a Christian perspective and others from an Atheist or Agnostic perspective. No ones view here is wrong or absolute truth to anyone but themselves and they did not try to present themselves as such. No ones view here is wrong or absolute truth to anyone but themselves and they did not try to present themselves as such. And if someone on the list is Jewish? Muslim? Buddhist? I agree the comments were considerate of atheiests, and I can see the argument about recovery from spiritual abuse but it is a slippery slope, and it seemed to me that the discussion was moving into comparative religions, at best, and there is no resolution to that. I could also get into how nada shaped my politics but that would be equally digressive. Thanks to those who asked me to stay; I should have raised it with the group first, and I apologise. Guest guest
>>And if someone on the list is Jewish? Muslim? > Buddhist? << Then let them share what has worked for them. That's all anyone was doing...and from what I read every single post on that, including my own, was very strongly of the opinion that each person has to find the truth that works for them. In fact, mine specifically stated " Christian or not " . Nobody, from what I read, was telling anyone else what they should or should not believe, or claiming that their own beliefs were the only " right " beliefs. Perhaps we understood the postings differently. Ninera --- Beverley son wrote: > > > > I really do not feel anyone was shoving their views > down anyones throat. Guest guest
Hi Beverley, I am also glad you came back. I hope that my posts did not offend you, and apologize if they did. I clearly labeled them as religion and spirituality and provided a disclaimer that they were my own beliefs. I appreciate hearing everyone's point of view on the subject of religion. It helps me to develop my own thoughts and in some cases gives me a different perspective. For some people, religion is a small or large part of their recovery as a KO, so I feel that it is relevant to this forum. I definitely agree that it can be a difficult topic, but we all seem to agree that everyone was respectful. While I am not buddhist, I did mention in my post yesterday that I believe in some buddhist teachings such as karma and chakras. If anyone wants to post about other belief systems such as Judaism, etc., I think the whole group would genuinely appreciate and respect them. I would like to borrow your example: I could also get into how nada shaped my politics but that would be equally digressive. If you ever would like to write about how your mother shaped your political views, I think you should be welcome to. Sure, it would be a little off topic, but I'm sure you would label it as such, as we did with the religion discussion. I've always viewed this as a support community in which we should feel comfortable and safe to share our opinions or beliefs on most anything. I will continue to feel this way and I hope others share this opinion. > > Hi Beverley, > Glad to see you're back! Thanks for the chance to discuss/clarify the subject of religion discussions. Guest guest
Hi Kyla and Ninera, I'm a Jewish poster (mostly a reader!) and I have always felt a deep appreciation that we can discuss religion, whether in terms of coping with holidays or our spiritual lives, in connection with BPD on this board. It's certainly a big part of life for many people. Many posters here who I know and love here are Christian of one denomination or another, and I personally feel enriched when they share how/whether their relationship with God is a part of " overcoming " their relationships with a nada or fada. I would feel the same about other belief systems, as long as the point of a post is not to convert or proselytize to another poster. I come here because I want to be encouraged and also to learn how other KOs grow and move forward - there are lots of ways, and walking a spirtual path is definitely a valid one. Guest guest
April & Ninera, April - This is exactly my sentiment for sharing my light bulb moment of yesterday. I was hoping just to share, not convert, no hidden agenda. It was a big moment for me. One minute I was reading along, the next I was dissolved in tears. It was huge for me. But I didn't expect the controversy,...oh well. I tried, I did ask for ANY other opinions at the end of my email. Ninera - I appreciate how you phrased your response as well; " the truth that works for them. " Thank you April & Ninera for your input. Guest guest
Just wanted to chime in briefly... I'm a Jewish poster as well, and I've found some of the discussion of spirituality to be interesting. I'm not a religious person myself (well, not anymore), but it is interesting to read about how other people find strength, wisdom, and comfort within their religion. That is a wonderful thing. I can also relate to people who may sometimes feel uncomfortable with religious discussions. Many Jewish Americans sometimes feel eclipsed by the overwhelming majority of Christianity. As though Christianity is the default religion and anything else is some sort of unusual anomaly. From my perspective, in the US where I reside, Christianity or agnosticism *is* the majority belief, and Judaism, for example, is statistically less popular. So I don't feel excluded by discussions of Christian thought, proverbs, or holidays. But I can see how some people who practice a belief system that is statistically less popular might feel a bit excluded. On the other hand, they can go ahead and post about their unique experience as a Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, agnostic, atheist, Pagan, Wiccan, animist person. That said, I think we can all try to be open to hearing everyone's beliefs and ways of viewing the world. But hey, we're doing that already . qwerty > > Hi Kyla and Ninera, > > I'm a Jewish poster (mostly a reader!) and I have always felt a deep > appreciation that we can discuss religion, whether in terms of > coping with holidays or our spiritual lives, in connection with BPD > on this board. Guest guest
I have noticed this as well and agree that Christians can be a little heavy handed...like if you explain your distaste for church or organized religion the aim seems to be to encourage you to get some Jesus elsewhere. But joking aside, I think the religion issue is an important one: my partner's nada is the one who goes Jesus crazy, sending my partner e-mail forward after e-mail forward about getting " saved " (after he's asked her politely more than once to stop sending spam). He's an atheist. (I'm not going to follow the trend and make a bunch of qualifications for why he's still good and open- minded even though he's an atheist...LOL.) I really think that some people, when they find that their power is limited over a situation and they feel like they NEED control, will invoke religion to try and get that power over others. So his nada has claimed that she will release " dark energy " over me, that she will cast spells on me, etc. She's told him things about how he's going to hell...this always seems to appear when she's terrified of losing CONTROL over him. I understand that people need something/someone to turn to when they feel like nothing is in their hands, and God is one way people deal with this, but she attempts to use God as a tool to threaten and intimidate. Of course, because my partner is an atheist, he just laughs. I'm not an atheist, but I laugh too because to misuse religion is a childish way to try to scare people and control them. S.
