Guest guest
this is strange. my holistic doc recommends xylitol over any of the other sweetners because it's natural and occurs in the body. hmmm. Guest guest
I have never heard of xylitol occurring naturally in the body. I will look that up, that is interesting. I buy the xylitol gum since it prevents cavities and is not toxic like floride. -- Re: Re:xylitol? this is strange. my holistic doc recommends xylitol over any of the other sweetners because it's natural and occurs in the body. hmmm. Guest guest
I just read some info regarding this issue. It all stemmed from one dog eating something that had a lot of xylitol in it and became very sick. Problem was that there were no tests done to prove it was the xylitol, it was just assumed that was what caused the problem and an alert was sent out regarding it. Guest guest
Hey Linn, I am on several yahoo groups for dogs, etc. as I have three and feed raw. Xylitol can be deadly to dogs. I did have several Vet websites that went into all the stuff you shouldn't feed dogs but it was on my computer that crashed. I think on rawpaws they have a list as well. Don't know about cats though. Guest guest
I think it was off the feeding list I'm on. I'd have to look it up, it was just posted recently otherwise it would be out of my short term memory!! I hadn't heard anything about it except through that. It did sound like the alert was sent out without proof. I'd definitely check it out if I was concerned. What would somebody be feeding that this would be in? Guest guest
Chocolate is bad for dogs as well so I can believe that xylitol is bad for doggies. -- Re: Re:xylitol? Guest guest
Well, actually nothing but as you mentioned about a dog dying it was from the dog getting to some tic tacs or something and actually did die. Guest guest
I'll have to look up the info I read. I thought it said that the instance that provoked the alert just made the dog very ill, but then again you can't necessarily trust my memory, it was something I just read over. I knew it wouldn't apply to me. I'll check it out and send it to you. Guest guest
I will be sure to keep my xylitol gum away from my cats. My dog loved chocolate chip cookies but I has to stop making them when I read about the bromo something or other, in the chocolate that was not good for dogs. -- Re: Re:xylitol? > > . > >
Guest guest
Well, there could have been more than one instance. My instance was a lady on one of my yahoo groups for raw food. Guest guest
As are onions and garlic, but I have given my dogs onions and garlic and sometimes they eat a little chocolate. In chocolate it is thrombine (sp) that affects dogs and makes them sick or in worse case scenario could kill them. Depends on the dog and of course the size of the dog. My Weimeraner ate a whole box of my chocolate covered cherries and it didn't faze her but I would bet if my little dogs ate chocolate they would not fare as well. _____ From: NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS [mailto:NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS ] On Behalf Of C. Guest guest
I did not realize onions and garlic too? I knew about the thiobromine in the chocolate since the late 70's ( think it may the the dark chocolate, not sure), but never heard about the garlic and onions. I hope cats don't have the same problem since they like to taste my steaks that I season with garlic and onion. My dog that liked the cookies was a larger breed too. He would be so excited everytime I baked the cookies that I just had to give him one or two but he would not stop at that so I just stopped baking them. They did smell awfully good. Your Weimeraner has good taste! I would love to eat a whole box of chocolate covered cherries! Especially now with my thyroid and adrenals so wacked out! -- Re: Re:xylitol?
