Guest guest
Is swimming good for TC? If so, any particular exercises? Thanks! Jodi
Guest guest
Jodi -- swimming has been my lifesaver for cardio exercise -- it has never bothered my back. I'm out of the pool right now sadly due to neck pain but not because of my TC. I also do pilates on the reformer machine, and a bit of the exercise bike. I would say just do what doesn't hurt you and avoid anything with a lot of dorsiflexion or jarring to your back. Pushing yourself through pain will not help you. Strong core muscles from a pilates based exercise program is really helpful for anyone with any type of back issue. I started off one-one with my physio before being able to go into regular classes. I was extremely athletic when I was younger, playing every sport and running -- have no idea if this was bad for me or not in the long run -- eg, did those activities make me worse as an adult? Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I find swimming is great in dealing with my TC. My physical therapy was done in a warm water pool at a health club. Once the therapy was over, I signed up for their fibromyalgia/arthritis classes and have been going for years. It has kept me limber, stronger and I am still walking despite the prescription I had for motorized wheelchair :-) Is it just swimming? Heck no, I take some strong narcotics, gabapentin/topamax and wear AFO's to my knee's. I also am training my dog to me a service dog so he can give me more stability while walking, help me up the stairs, and I am trying to teach him to bring me the phone when it rings (he absolutely hates the phone). But, swimming does help a lot. Meiser > Is swimming good for TC? If so, any particular exercises? > > Thanks! > > Jodi > >

Guest guest
Hi Jodi -- I'm a swimmer and my back doesn't mind doing crawl or breastroke -- swimming for me is so much easier than walking! But, everyone's different. What about aquasize or water walking/running (eg like with a belt)? I know at my pool there are special classes for those with special needs, is something like that available to you? I did do physio in the water for a bit after my first surgery, before I could swim lengths again. I worked one-one with a water rehab specialist (can't remember her exact title!). I'll know more at my next appt. in October. Would love to know if anyone has a pump though. I just bought a pool lift (I use a wheelchair) and intend to swim every summer. I'm wondering if a pump would be a problem? Speaking of swimming, my back seems to not like my laps or leg exercises. For those who swim, what exactly do you do in the pool? Thanks!
