As an RN I have often bumped into the conversations around who can use therapy, whether coaching is therapy, and whatever. I love words - this post reminded me of some of those discussions. I visited the blog myself and totally missed the mistake, which may evidence how I feel about words and where my tongue is when I say how much I live them...:).

I am a proud member of our SIG which is facilitating the availability of ACT as a peer-led, self-improvement tool. My own opinion (which nobody asked for!) is that the appropriate use of words like 'therapy' is a subject for deeply-buried legislative offices and I totally ignore it, which keeps me from having to decide between it and 'training'. My personal favorite therapy professionals are priests of all disciplines, who are exempted by unimpeachable authorities from getting in trouble for using the word...:).

Not even sure where all this is coming from, unless it is some fused association with the many different fronts upon which Nursing runs into similar issues, but I am glad Kate raised it. I can always use a reminder that there is the label and then there is the reality. ACT applies to therapists, coaches, and gardeners, and I hope Charlene feels welcome and comfortable and warmly fuzzy using all the terms the rest of us do!

Hi Charlene

Thanks for the link. I find the way you've redefined ACT a little presumptuous of you though! " Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) is a powerful learning and coaching model " - that doesn't seem very appropriate to me. The T in ACT has never stood for " training " as far as I know and calling it a " learning and coaching model " is a bit of a stretch. It's not as if there's a trademark on the name, but calling it that isn't accurate and it could be considered misappropriation.

On the ScyFy TV channel, there is a spot where a cartoon guy points toward a horizon and says, " What does THAT mean...? " .I often repeat this during my adventures.D

Oops I probably should retract all that, apparently ACT is sometimes known as Acceptance and Commitment Training - apologies

Amazing, ain't it? Life is but a dream, da-dup, da-dup...:).D,

Yeah, we use it that way when it is outside of a therapy context. In business and industry, for example, no one wants " therapy " for employees, but they do want training. And guess what? Its the same principles

and many of the same methodsFrom the beginning we've said why we are doing it tho- S C. ****

Well, I have no control but it would feel comforting to know the folks called coaches and what not really stay in touch somehow with the why. To: ACT_for_the_Public Sent: Sunday, April 8, 2012 5:01 PM Subject: Re: Re: Sharing my new blog: ACT in the Moment

Hi

Still feeling a little embarrassed about taking Charlene to task, I should have

checked it more out first before commenting.

I'll have a look at the doco on iview, I must have missed mention of its

broadcast - which isn't hard for me - the tv isn't on that often once the news

is over.
