Subject: Surgery Wednesday To: tetheredspinalcord Date: Friday, August 31, 2012, 5:28 PM I am having Tethered cord surgery on Wednesday Sept 5th. Anyone have any tips on things to do or watch for before and after surgery? My doctor said I will be in the hospital for about 4 days. I have to lay flat on my back for 24-48 hours. She also said that at first I might have trouble walking because the nerves will be aggravated from the surgery. Guest guest
Make sure you have pillows for your sides and arms. Take an MP3 player if you have one. I had a hard time seeing the TV due to the pain meds. That's all I can think of right now. Hope this helps, Kellie thowes1956 wrote: >I am having Tethered cord surgery on Wednesday Sept 5th. Guest guest
I think everyone reacts differently. I think age and physical condition going into this plays a part as well. courtney hargis wrote: >i had my surgery on april 2nd 2012, i only had to lay flat 24 hrs and i was up and walking the next day with pt and i didnt have much nerve pain until like a month post op when my pt became more aggressive i was back to work in 7 weeks, i still have some issues with pain and nerve pain but overall my surgery went well, but its scary and i kn ow you are nervous, good luck! > > > > > > >Subject: Surgery Wednesday >To: tetheredspinalcord >Date: Friday, August 31, 2012, 5:28 PM > > >I am having Tethered cord surgery on Wednesday Sept 5th. Anyone have any tips on things to do or watch for before and after surgery? My doctor said I will be in the hospital for about 4 days. I have to lay flat on my back for 24-48 hours. She also said that at first I might have trouble walking because the nerves will be aggravated from the surgery. If anyone has any kinds of tips I would love to hear them!! > > > >------------------------------------ > >NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. Guest guest
That's great !! I hope mine goes as well as yours did! I really hope it's only 24hrs I have to lay flat. Did your legs feel real weak when you first started walking? My doctor said I might not be able to walk right away because of the nerves being aggravated from the surgery. I'll be glad when it is all over!!! Thanks for your good wishes:) > > > > Subject: Surgery Wednesday > To: tetheredspinalcord > Date: Friday, August 31, 2012, 5:28 PM > > > I am having Tethered cord surgery on Wednesday Sept 5th. Guest guest
Good idea for the pillows! I will ask for them. I do have an MP3 player so maybe I will take it with me. Guest guest
Well I am 55 for about another month and in fairly good health except for leg issues. The back operation is a scary thing!! One wrong move and that could make you paralyzed for the rest of your life!! I'm trying not to think about it and I'm just hoping everything will go well. You are right though about everyone reacting differently. I guess I will find out Tuesday!! > > > > > > > >Subject: Surgery Wednesday > >To: tetheredspinalcord > >Date: Friday, August 31, 2012, 5:28 PM > > > > > >I am having Tethered cord surgery on Wednesday Sept 5th. > > > > > > > >------------------------------------ > > > >NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. Guest guest
Before surgery get as much ready at home as possible, depending on how much support you will have (eg stuff up high, meals frozen ready to go, cleaning done, etc). Getting stuff liked raised toilet seat, shower seat, non-slip bath mat, etc ahead of time is a plus. Loose clothing to go home in -- I was in yoga pants for months.... pillows for the car ride home. I thought I would watch movies and do email but that did not happen -- mp3 player is a good idea, I did use that. Most important based on my experience -- If you have someone who can stay with you during the days after surgery, till your able to sit up on your own and take care of yourself, is a plus. Not sure how I would have survived without my husband by my side -- you are totally dependent on someone else at first for EVERYTHING and my experience was the nurses did not have enough time to help you with everything. When you get home do not overdue it -- that will not get you healed faster -- do what you are told! The walking is important but take it slow. I developed a spinal leak after I got home, no fun. I'm sure that won't happen but just know that your dura is healing so do not try to be superman and do too much. I'm sure there's more that has been erased from my memory! Guest guest
That is great advice Dee!! I will try to get as much cleaning done as I can. I have scrub pants that I will make sure to pack in my bag. I'll make sure that my husband or my daughter whoever will be picking me up brings pillows. So if you didn't watch movies or do emails what did you do after you got home any why didn't you do those things. I did plan on doing alot of computer stuff so I would like to know why you didn't. Depending when I get home it will either be my daughters or my husband. He is working Friday to Sunday but will be off the whole next week to be with me. He can be with me in the hospital Wednesday & Thursday but has to work the next 3 days. How many nights did you spend at the hospital. My doctor said 3-5 so I will have to wait and see. How soon did you get out of bed? Guest guest
I meant I didn't watch movies or do email in the hospital -- due to being so drugged up and in such rough shape. But, I now that my horrid post-surgery experience was partly the meds -- as I had the same reactions post-spinal fusion and post sinus surgery -- me and opiates and anesthesia do not mix. I did watch a lot of tv and movies when I got home. I think I was in hospital 5 nights -- I didn't get up out of bed til maybe day 3 but that is not normal -- it was because I was having such horrid headaches and other stuff that I couldn't get up. I should have been up on day 2 or 3. I think I remember my husband staying home with me for the first week and then I was just fine on my own as long as he helped me with my morning shower and had breakfast and lunch food up high where I could reach it. My memory of the details are fuzzy! I think you'll be fine having your husband with you Wed and Thurs -- after that you should be sitting up and hopefully walking and will be able to manage " on your own " without him. Once you do get moving about pain really does decrease significantly. Dee To: tetheredspinalcord From: thowes1956@... Guest guest
yes, I think you'll do just fine when your husband has to back to work by yourself during the day. I had my neighbour go for short walks with me until I felt comfortable going out on my own. And, you won't be able to drive for 3-4 weeks. Good luck -- you'll be so happy when it's overwith and you can focus on healing rather than worrying! To: tetheredspinalcord From: thowes1956@... I do have an MP3 player so maybe I will take it with me. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it:) > > >I am having Tethered cord surgery on Wednesday Sept 5th. > > >
