An update on the NUrsing SIG progress:I am still collecting courageous supporters for the application process. You need not do anything but state your support for the endeavor - absolutely no cash or public speaking commitments will be solicited!

I have begun a Yahoo list in advance, as experience tells me it is the most time-consuming part of the post-application management. I have sent invitations to those who expressed interest. The focus of the list will be on the opportuities and challenges of behavioral coaching from the nursing role. ACT will have the major emphasis as the organizational structure and method of implementation. Other modalities, such as motivational interviewing (my second favorite) will also be welcome topics of discussion.

The list info is below. I do not expect high volume from such a specialize, newly born list. I do, however, hope that this will give us a common fire around which to build community with the nursing contact I have been getting, while the SIG is being constructed. It is my hope that nurses will from here see some value in ACBS membership and thus begin a journey into coaching that will expand ever more deeply into profession.

Feel free to point nurses at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NurseCoach/.

Thanks for putting up with me while I try to launch this!-----

Behavioral coaching can increase Nursing's value to clients by helping them succeed at diabetic diets, smoking cessation, managing risk behaviors, and more. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), in particular, offers a model for mapping and walking a clear path to a valued life. Other tools should also be explored, such as motivational interviewing, brief interventins, and the training in therapeutic communication so central to our profession. Most importantly, we can bring our selves to people in need, making the difference when they are lost.

Nurses are trusted professionals who engage deeply with those they care for. It is our ethical duty to go beyond teaching a healthy lifestyle: we have the ability and the obligation to coach each unique person until he or she can grasp and hold onto a life worth living.

-----DThere are many special interest groups (SIGs) within the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Community, but not one for nurses. I am trying to see just how much interest there is in setting up a SIG for nurses interested in ACT and behavioral change coaching. My hope is that folks on the general lists getting this might forward it along to nurses they know, creating a bit of a viral momentum.

My name Darrell King. I work as a psychiatric RN for the State of New York in a community setting, and my focus is on coaching behavioral change. I am involved in bringing the use of CT into the Nursing setting for the purpose of assisting clients with behavioral change in areas from diabetic diets to medication compliance to managing psychotic symptoms. I see this tool as something useful to nurses whether they work in the home or the hospital, a way to make healing in this area available even on a nurse's limited schedule.

I think we can benefit from establishing a nursing SIG focused on behavioral change, which can have many functions. One of these is the online discussion list, wherein members exchange ideas, thoughts, problems, and suggestions in pursuit of growth and problem-solving. If you have such an interest, please send me your name and email at DarrellGKing@... and I will notify you when the list is set up.

I now have six ACBS members supporting the Nursing SIG. Seven, if I count. So, three or four more nurses, or ACBS members who love nurses, would be helpful. Of course, vote with your conscience and only help out if you think a special interest group for nurses would add benefit to the overall organization.

It might be important to know that I have been getting interest from a few contacts outside the membership as well, and a few have already registered with the Yahoo list. I am hopeful this will become a new outreach for ACT not the Nursing profession.

As far as I know, supporters need do nothing but vote for the birth of the SIG.Thanx,D

Hi Darrell,

I think an ACBS Nursing SIG would be of great value. Nurses serve a great number

of people, in hospitals as well as in doctor's offices and community programs. I

can think of dozens of ways that a nurse's ability to help his or her patients

would be enhanced with ACT skills.

Sincerely,

Wanda Zimmerman

Thank you, Wanda, and I agree. Are you an ACBS member? If yes, would you vote to support the SIG?I will invite you to the discussion list. Hopefully, we can soon begin to hammer out details and begin tossing ideas about in there.

Thanks!  :)D
