Guest guest
Hello! I am new to the group and feel like an alien finally finding a home. As I've read through todays mail I feel relief in many ways. I have come to understand that my mom has BPD only as of about a half a year ago. I searched for 3 days straight to find anyone to communicate with. I'm a little over half way through Stop Walking on Eggshells. This last year I have received many " gifts " left at my door. A bag of cut up pictures, with heads specifically chopped out,of me, my extended and immediate family including my children. Holiday cards that my parents gave each other. I was offer the ashes of my brothers burned baby book. And recieved a couple of other things. This last year has been the most intense yet freeing experience of my life with my BPD mom. And the compliments...again, I can relate to so many of you in this group. In know someone else asked this today, but I never saw a response. What is NADA. I understand the reference, but not the acronym itself. Were any of you scared to first start communicating online for fear that someone would find out and it would get back to someone? Thanks for the ears D > > Hi hi, > I've noticed a lot of mentions of strange gifts from da nada. I'd love to > hear more. Guest guest
Here's one: She gave my sister, who had asked for a coat, a box of hangers! No coat to put on the hangers and my sister still froze her butt off that winter even though Nada had MORE than enough money to give a coat. Here's the thing: They " give " only to look good, they don't care about whether or not you can use or enjoy the " gift " . It is completely self serving. Don't accept anything from them. Of course, they will lie to everyone anyway and claim that they gave large amounts of presents or money they never gave in the first place. Girlscout Cowboy wrote: Hi hi, I've noticed a lot of mentions of strange gifts from da nada. I'd love to hear more. My mom saves manilla envelopes for just about everyone she knows. No personal notes or cards, but sometimes blank ones. Lots of pictures ripped out of magazines and catalogues, hard candies, and who knows what else. Also, the gifts are so strange. She gave my boyfriend a used jersey with " james " printed on the back (not his name and definitly not his team). She also tried to give him one of my brother's childhood drawings that she has saved for the past 32 years or so. I'm interested to hear more about weird gifts. I know a lot of us have recieved clothes that will in no way ever possibly fit. Thanks, Girlscout
Guest guest
Oh another thing: In teh past she would go over to my friends homes and claim to have " bags of presents " for me. Strange, if she had something to give me why didn't she just hand it to me herself? My friend ended up collecting several bags of the stuff. I visited him one day and he showed me the bags. They were filled with old moth eaten clothing. She had obviously gone to a clothing bank and just picked up free stuff. None of it fit me and, because it was in such tatted condition, I couldn't have worn it even if it had. Again, they " give " ONLY to look good in front of an audience or to obligate you somehow. Then when you comment that the gift seemed unfitting for you, they will call you ungrateful or selfish. These people are complete asses. Guest guest
this past christmas my daughter (5 years old) recieved a giraffe piggy bank... let me describe it for you... a hollow circular base... with 3 long clear tubes that stick out of it... the top tube has giraffe print on parts of it... attached to the top is a giraffe head that looks like it's being choked. It's mouth is hanging open and it's tongue is hanging out on one side. You place the coins into it's mouth, and into a hole at the back of it's throat... when you put a coin in, it's eyes (that are bugging out of it's head) start to blink a bright red. This thing scares ME!!! It's extremely creepy looking... my daughter won't put it in her room, because she can see the shape of it in the dark and it freaks her out. I can't believe this thing was for sale ANYWHERE. I can't think of a single person that it would be appropriate for... it's frightening! Guest guest
Speaking of gifts for kids, my Nada keeps buying my two year old daughter books about monsters. Monster alphabet, monster soup, Hugry monsters. Nada tells me how cute the drawings are and thinks the stories are so funny. We have enough monsters in our life thank you. The last time we saw Nada (in January) we met her at the local library and she showed up in the most rediculous jacket I have ever seen. She was so pleased with it because it was on sale and reduced about 4 times. I wanted to ask her if they were paying her to wear it, but as you all know, sarcasm is lost on her! Guest guest
Mine has a habit of giving me gifts for stuff she's gotten free but acting like she paid for them. When she's flush they can be something nice like a little make up bag with samples in it that she got free cuz she spent a lot at Lancome. Other times they are random freebees she's gotten in the mail like a pair of pantyhose. And on the rare instances when she actually buys me something it's always something totally not my taste or something I would have liked at age 6. Guest guest
That reminds me of the time that my mom randomly got my three kids three incredibly creepy paintings of rabbits. On each one the background is black and there's an insanely close head shot of a rabbit who looks like he was just caught in a snare with beady, panicked eyes. None of my kids wanted them in their rooms. > > this past christmas my daughter (5 years old) recieved a giraffe piggy > bank... let me describe it for you... > > a hollow circular base... with 3 long clear tubes that stick out of > it... the top tube has giraffe print on parts of it... attached to > the top is a giraffe head that looks like it's being choked. Guest guest
My Nada offered to but me $10k wood floors. The guy helping us could not believe I refused her offer. But he seemed to understand when I told him, " if I except that, she'll always have that hanging over me " . Oh, and how about framing my brothers childhood drawings for his wedding gift after she burned his baby album. WOW. Guest guest
Hi Dawn - glad you are here amongst the other aliens . Someone probably already responded my NADA is for a BP mother and FADA is a BP FADA. Some people also say SMOTHER. I can relate to the headless pictures. I have a box of pictures where nada surgically cut the heads off, or cut herself out of pictures with members of the family. I don't think there is a single bizarre thing that someone has posted that hasn't happened to me. An example is the recent thread about hair pulling - it's amazing. Welcome to the group. Let us know how we can help. Tag Re: Bizzarro Gifts Hello! I am new to the group and feel like an alien finally finding a home. As I've read through todays mail I feel relief in many ways. Guest guest
my nada did that all the time! she has a high-status professional job and would have to go on a lot of business trips and she would bring back the free samples and stuff she got like they were gifts from the places she went. and for christmas she would wrap up some free stuff she got from different companies and give them to me and have a big huge explanation of why its such a great gift > > Mine has a habit of giving me gifts for stuff she's gotten free but > acting like she paid for them. Guest guest
It hurt when my mom gave me gifts that made no sense. Like I wasn't important enough to her for her to actually think about what I would really like, the colors I like, or even remotely the right size. I remember her taking gifts back too, giving me a CD of music and then telling me that " she would appreciate it more " or giving me gifts other people gave her. She spent hundreds of dollars on gifts every month - but they were all so weird - like the football jersey with " " on the back of it that she gave my BF Todd. It also made me angry that she couldn't buy me a text book or hair cut or even pay a small portion of the mortgage or a power bill when I was small, but she would spend several hundred dollars buying things for her hairdresser. Oh, lightbulb, the weird envelopes she gives me are mostly filled with ripped out pictures from catalogues and magazines. She must look at items and, not knowing who she herself is, rip out pictures trying to define me. So far she has come no where near the mark. > > > > > > Speaking of gifts for kids, my Nada keeps buying my two year old > daughter books about monsters. Guest guest
Great topic! Lately I've been getting photo albums, only the photos are so grainy that they look very blurry and are hardly recognizable. They're not done on photo paper, and I'd be embarrassed to show them because they look so amateur. I truly do appreciate the thought -- it's a nice gesture! -- but both of my parents are photographers by profession and I know they can do a professional job. Oh, and I also get boatloads of tchochkes (knickknacks). I've told her I appreciate the effort, but would prefer a gift card. She still hasn't gotten the hint, so Goodwill has a few hundred extra tchochkes thanks to nada. Any idea how to politely refuse stuff you don't need, or is it better to keep donating? > > Hi hi, > I've noticed a lot of mentions of strange gifts from da nada. I'd love to > hear more. Guest guest
Not so much strange as totally opposite of what was asked for. nada- " What should I get your husband for Christmas? " me- " Nothing, he doesn't need anything. He doesn't want you to spend money on him. " nada- " C'mon. I need ideas. " me- saying no fifteen more times then finally giving her an idea. " A shirt. " nada- " Ok, what color? " me- " Anything but RED. " Christmas day...husband opens BRIGHT RED SHIRT. She also likes to force things down your throat even if you say no thank you a thousand times. She gets offended when she finally realizes you really mean no. > > Hi hi, > I've noticed a lot of mentions of strange gifts from da nada. I'd love to > hear more. Guest guest
Today I just put out some things for one of the local charities...my donation included all of the clothes that Nada can no longer wear but she thought I might be able to use (as if I would EVER wear anything she wore)...it also included the Christmas gift my husband and I got this year. It was a crockpot. I already have two, one of which is not even a year old. Rather than keep the newest one and be irritated about who gave it to me everytime I make beef stew, I decided to donate it. Here is a confounding gift giving behavior for you...I got married in Las Vegas and had a reception back home a week later. Prior to the wedding, Nada was convinced that me and my husband-to-be were alcoholics (completely and totally untrue). Twenty-five people came out to Las Vegas with us including Nada and my father. We invited everyone to dinner at a place called Cravings. When we get there Nada anounces all the drinks are on my parents so please place an order. My friends all thought it was bizarre given Nada's assertion that we were alcoholics. Seriously, would you offer to buy your daughter and new son-in-law drinks if you thought they were alcoholics? Go figure! > > I have received " bizzaro gifts " from my mother but I have > witnesses " bizzaro behavior " in regard to gift giving. Guest guest
Hey, welcome and congrats on your survivorship Ha ha, my mom did that once - I mean gave me a portrait of herself framed. I threw out the picture and used the frame for a photo of my dog. Even weirder than that, my bpd ex mother in law once gave us a professional portrait of her dog with a frame that you could record sound into. She recorded herself saying " speak " and the dog barking into it. WTF? Why would I want that? > > I'm new to this group too. Interesting and amazing topics! Guest guest
I made the mistake of telling my mother to buy my boys sweatshirts for Christmas 5 or 6 years ago. This was in reaction to a phone call from the mall and her freaking out because she didn't know what to get them. " Boys are soooooo hard " . So needless to say my boys have gotten sweatshirts every year since. Its a big joke in our house when they open their gifts from her..... " could it be a sweatshirt??? " . She also has boxes of paints and craft stuff galore (I'm talking hundreds of dollars worth) at her house. I have suggested she teach them how to paint, let loose, and have a ball. Nope......she would rather her paints dry up and her paper to yellow, rather than lift a finger to try and bond with my boy's. She bought a really nice boat.....I thought for sure she would ask for the boys to take them sking or fishing. Nope....she did however buy my niece a really expensive life jacket.....that was used only once or twice. Its really sad.........she could have had the boys eating out of the palms of her hands. They are the sweetest boys ever....and they adore their other grandparents and love doing things with them, and for them. My 17 year old goes on the weekends to help his grandpa in his shop, and last year spent the whole summer with my dad working. Who lives 25 miles from my nada......you think she could have invited him over even once for a meal??? NO......instead she was pissed that he (17) didn't call her (60). My 15 year old mows my inlaws lawn every week and my 9 year old is just so happy to let my mother inlaw smother him in kisses and hugs. So irratating......so stupid.....her loss!!! drlingirl > > > > this past christmas my daughter (5 years old) recieved a giraffe > piggy > > bank... let me describe it for you... > > > > a hollow circular base... with 3 long clear tubes that stick out > of > > it... the top tube has giraffe print on parts of it... attached > to > > the top is a giraffe head that looks like it's being choked.
