Guest guest
i'm 26 and i grew up when a lot of males my age (and a little older) idolized musicians like kurt cobain and other more or less effeminate male role models (these guys were " cool, " but still got beat up in gym class). i think because of this, the cohort i grew up with was more willing to challenge male stereotypes. i remember a lot of my guy friends and a boyfriend experimenting with makeup and clothing and other things that were not typically male. i don't know if it is just the guys i grew up with or a general change in younger guys... probably my sample is skewed. my husband is what i refer to as " a kitten and flowers kinda guy. " he's so freaking adorable. the only problem with this is that i have this...i dunno...duty to shield him from my mom's misandrous friends. i can't believe a 50 yr old woman would target such a sweetheart!!! (it's happened before and i have had to literally say, " step off, bitch " to get them to back off my husband...scary...) i just don't understand this double standard!!! these women complain that men have to be in control to feel masculine, but when they encounter one who doesn't need to express his dominance, who is genuinely NICE, they treat him like he's not a man, like he's got no spine, which just isn't the case... wtf? as far as interests go, as a math teacher, i have to say that i am not seeing any evidence that boys are better at math. i teach remedial 8th grade classes and i wish the classes were not co-ed. this is because they boys are so incredibly far behind the girls that they don't want to make themselves look stupid in front of the girls. they feel stupid and they know they're incredibly screwed if they don't pass math this year (thank you NCLB). in EVERY CLASS, the girls are several grade levels above the boys. it's insane. also, i love the argument about how boys are better at spacial recognition and manipulation than girls are...that's why boys are more drawn to engineering fields. WHATEVER! sewing uses the exact same skills as engineering. CAD programs and pattern making programs are almost identical. making 2-d pieces of cloth fit around a 3-d body is incredibly challenging. i don't see why girls who are good at sewing aren't encouraged to go into science and engineering more. i think if i go on any longer, this is just going to devolve into a rant...grrrrrrr... bink > > > > My mother had to play stupid in front of men because > > she believed that they would be intimidated if they > > thought she was smart.
