Guest guest
Hi Joy, Yesterday the knee was 5 x's the size of my other knee. My therapist said to ice frequently and not overdo cleaning etc. It seems a little less swollen this morning. I will ask about heat when I see her next week. I might even try it this weekend. The new theory is to let the healing include the inflamation. No anit-inflamatory drugs can be used. Evidentally, if it is inflammed it is part of the healing process and must be allowed in order to go on to the next stage. My knee has been swollen for years now but that is what adds to the pain. It is not unbearable but physically my energy level is prompting me to do something other than lie around with ice packs. My therapist wants the swelling down in order to be able to increase my workouts with her. I was anemic from blood loss but feel the iron pills are working as I now have more energy. I hope you are progressing. Everyday we are getting closer to our new improved selves. My knee despite the pain feels so much stronger and supports me without giving out. I am trying to undo the muscle changes that occurred as a result of compensation for my bad knee. That is what causes the most pain in therapy as I am lengthing muscles that are now shorter due to compensation for problem knee. (only in the early stages), a heat pack 5-10 mins while you have a coffee before exercise may help get the knee to relax and straighten. What do your physios recommend?I know that "I over-did it" feeling all to well - trouble is at the time it doesn't always feel that way, (An older sister used to wag her finger at me saying "you always overdo things" until I said some days just getting out of bed is too much and some are fine. Thankfully she stopped after that.)I allow myself to 'graze' when it comes to exercise - so that it's an either or thing - eg walk or exercise routine, not both. Hope to get some walking in at least every 2-3 days now & get lungs feeling healthier. I plan to buy good lace-up walking boots which will allow for an insert so long walks won't tire me so much (due to leg length difference).wishing you a really good recovery - no infx (keep onto whatever lung physio you do) and good healing - and no more pain! yippee!cheersjoy. Guest guest
Cindi, do you elevate the leg above heart level several times a day, or did they say not to do that? It's usually a help with leg issues. My drs have recommended it to me, although I almost never do because I get busy doing things! Guest guest
Hi Kay, Yes I do elevate it along with icing it about 3 x's a day. The man across the street had a knee replacement in January and both of his knees are now the same size. His doctor gave him celebrex for the swelling. I could call the doctor to see if I can take an anti-inflammatory but I think his theory is the new theory that the swelling is part of the process and I need to go through it. It was swollen for years before the surgery. It also has lost 2 1/2 inches of swelling since the surgery. I just need to be patient and let my body heal even though I am ready to get up and do everything I used to do. Thanks for the tip. Guest guest
hi Cindi interesting about not having anti-inflammatories - was recommended to cease mine about a week after home, even tho still quite a lot of swelling. It is probably better as it makes you more aware to massage and keep the area moving. I only have a little swelling left, just noticeable in my foot with shoes a tad tighter than usual, and at the surgery site. It does come down to taking time and doing the physio to get the body repairing itself, with a lot of help of course! with you all the way, cheers joy
