Guest guest
Gender socialization plays a huge role in why women aren't more inclined to go fix the car. It's not just that we are interested in other things and therefore don't have time to fix the car; that interestedness (or disinteredness) is something we are taught and so we pick it up from a young age. We're taught that guys are the ones who are more interested in that/better at that. This becomes really obvious when you are fortunate enough to be in an environment where gender socialization breaks down. For instance, back in the day I went to a magnet high school for math/science/engineering. There were just as many girls as there were boys, and no one ever acted like it was strange that the girls were there or had ambitions toward these fields. It wasn't until I went to college that I heard of things like the Society for Women in Engineering and realized how marginalized our gender is in these fields. When I didn't know we weren't supposed to care about such things, it never even occurred to me not to care, be interested, and excel in them myself.
