Pesticide in soap is in us, too

Tell EPA to get triclosan out of “antibacterial†products. Sign our petition today!

Triclosan. You’ll find it in hand sanitizers, soaps and other products claiming to be “antibacterial.†Its use is so widespread that scientists have found it in the bodies of more than 75% of the U.S. population.

It's also a pesticide, and it can be harmful to your health and to the environment. And studies show that soap and water are just as effective at preventing disease.

Say no to triclosan» Join a national effort to get triclosan out of consumer products. EPA is taking public comment on the pesticide’s fate right now.

Triclosan is the active ingredient in a wide range of antibacterial household and personal care products, from deodorant to toothpaste, trash bags to cleaning supplies. A hormone disruptor, the chemical interferes with estrogen, androgen and thyroid hormones, and can impact fetal development. It also persists in the environment, contaminating water and building up in plants.

And studies have found that antibacterials like triclosan can create “superbacteria†resistant to antibiotics. The triclosan products now lining supermarket shelves should never have been approved.

Take Action» EPA is now reviewing a legal petition filed by our colleagues at Beyond Pesticides and Food and Water Watch to get triclosan out of consumer products. PAN and more than 80 other health and environmental groups across the country have signed on. Voice your support today!

Thank you for doing your part to protect us all.
