County schools could field a swim team in the ponds that form around even

the lightest rains. At schools where trailers are used for additional

classrooms, like Jennie Computer Magnet Elementary, kids have to step

carefully to avoid falling in; A ceiling-mounted water heater at Burke High

School leaks close to the building's fire alarm system, causing officials

there to worry that water may put out the alarm instead of the

fire;Maintenance crews opted for external wiring for the phone system at

Memminger Elementary. When it rains, principal Ann Oplinger says, the

telephones sometimes don't work; Alice Birney Middle restroom sink with only

cold water knob; Rusted-away door at Septima P. Corporate Academy;

exit sign installed backward at Island High; Children work next to a

wall where paint is flaking off onto the floor and sills at River

Creative Arts Magnet Elementary; Sandbags are used at Ft. to keep

water from coming under a door; Well-placed bucket in the library at

Springfield Elementary keeps books dry; Fire alarm surrounded by stained

ceiling tiles from roof leaks at Schroder Middle; Electrical cords run along

a hallway at Middleton High; Water leaks have ruined a door painted by

parents at Ford Elementary; SE:Where our children learn School tours

and community meetings were conducted in September at every ton

County school. Here is a list of ``critical needs'' that emerged from the

meetings:

Academic Magnet School Present Buildings:

Water for clinic and cafeteria.

Handicap accessibility (parents and students).

Exit doors for two usable rooms.

Leaks in modules roofs and windows.

P.A. and alarm system to modules.

Heating/air conditioning/humidity control; especially in auditorium.

Auditorium lights.

Signage and traffic patterns.

Exterior lighting.

Drainage.

Bring existing facility up to state health and safety standards.

Convert from a temporary to a permanent facility which meets projected

enrollment and curriculum standards.

Long Term Expansions:

Cafeteria/media center/classrooms/science labs expand to 600 students.

Related site work.

Sports fields/complex.

Landscaping.

Alice Birney Middle School

Need flooring (carpet) removed - health problem.

Fix air quality problems with air conditioning and heating.

Walls seep - need to be sealed and repainted.

Need to replace water-damaged ceiling.

Roof needs repairs.

Restrooms need sinks/partitions.

Need sinks in science room.

Get rid of trailers and replace with new classroom wing.

Traffic patterns, driveways, parking and paving need improvement.

Baptist Hill High School

Need plumbing upgrade - new toilets, urinals and sinks.

Need new copy machine for teachers.

Need new wiring, more computers.

Drainage - fix poor drainage around athletic fields.

Need soundproofing in main office. It's very loud.

Need new lighting for athletic fields.

Upgrade heating/air conditioning systems.

Belle Hall Elementary School

P.A. system in renovated part of the building.

There is a lot of VAT (vinyl asbestos tile) in this school.

Roof drainage problems affecting soffits and fascias.

Some renovation would mean the school could use the existing gym.

There is some additional fence required.

Corcoran Elementary School

Heating/air conditioning/humidity problems.

Air quality problems.

Roofs/ceilings; stop leaks and replace ceiling tiles.
