Guest guest
Hi, Being propped up in bed is better than laying flat – less painful. You can also try giving your mom gentle pats on the back to help loose things up. What meds did the doctor prescribe? I’m a big fan of Levequin – helps you feel better within hours. Hope things improve quickly for your mom. From: phil292000 Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2011 2:47 AM To: LBDcaregivers Subject: Choking Problem!!! Guest guest
Hi, My Mom is recovering from pneumonia. I had picked up 'Chestal' cough syrup - it's homeopathic and contains NO DM. It's been helping a lot, AND, my aunt is noting better cognition... interesting... my Mom actually used a complete sentence with me yesterday. Hope your mom feels better soon. Guest guest
Hi, We have been going through similar and learned it is aspiration related . The pc ordered home health care and they have provided a lot of help including a speech therapist who is fantastic at figuring out what the swallowing issues are and coaching everyone how to help my mil eat/drink and not get it into her airway. I had to ask for this because before we were not making any headway - she kept choking on food and liquids and having the resultant aspiration pneumonia. So far now so good. I would recommend you look into this if possible, it could turn up some additional answers. We have my mil sitting up or lying in bed (standard medicare hospital bed where the head and feet elevate) at about 30 -35 degree angle because she has a giant hiatle hernia however having her elevated like this was also a recommendation by home health (we have been doing this all along). To loosen the phlem so she can cough it up easier there is nothing better I've found than mucinex tablets and extra water. With my mil we have to coach her on everything - including coughing and spitting it out. I put Kleenex in her hand so it's ready otherwise she will not spit it out. If you aren't using a nebulizer yet it would also be helpful. That's about all I can offer. I hope it gets better soon Dorothy From: LBDcaregivers [mailto:LBDcaregivers ] On Behalf Of phil292000 Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2011 11:48 PM To: LBDcaregivers Subject: Choking Problem!!! Guest guest
when i was sick with pneumonia this past summer adn also daddy before he passed away , i jused the infamous vicks vapor rub, but i found that i prefered the watkins mentholatum rub. it is much thicker and stays on skin longer to absorb better. the one i used was in teh round tin but i see they have alto of other options now in their catalog here is the webpage for the home office. i do not have a rep that i know of so i jsut found the main website.  http://www.watkinsonline.com/productsgroup.cfm?Parent=9 & family=231 & gCatalogLocal\ e=USA & group=599  i also put a warm tshirt from the dryer on my chest or his chest to help teh rub get absorbed and also the old fashioined pounding fo the back to loosen up the phelgm. we had to teacdh daddy how to clear his throat and when he did that it would bring up the mucous and i would make him stick his tongue out adn wipe it off. he couldnt spit so i had to take care of it for him.  ihope this help hugs. sharon Subject: Choking Problem!!!
