Guest guest
Bonnie, Your approach is superb. It's people like that teacher who Patty need prove anything to. Trying to reach some people and make them understand is like pouring water in a vessel with a hole. They will never be useful as a container. Energy should not be wasted. Unfortunately Patty like will have contact with these types of people in their lifetime. If the container cannot hold compassion then there are other things of importance it cannot hold either. For every one person who doesn't understand our children there are dozens who do. I have always found that there are people of higher authority who do have the capacity to understand and help. In my dealings with the County MHMR agency I stopped beating my head against the wall. I went up the ladder and found people who could understand. The people up the ladder have jurisdiction. Keep going until you find the one who understands with the power to change your situation. That person is out there in 95% of the cases. mom to (24) Turk22082@... wrote: From: Turk22082@... Hi everyone! Some news I wanted to share. We have always fought for Patty to have an appropriate education for her. Every year we have had to fight to keep her out of a contained class. This year there has been one teacher who never showed up for any meetings and even spoke about his belief of Patty's lack of intellectual abilities. He got reprimanded for this statement. Anyway, we got Patty's progress report. She is doing fine in her classes, mostly C's except for this one where she is currently failing. We were not notified of this problem. When we read this we called to talk to him. His only response on our answering machine was he could not meet on fridays but would get back to us. He never did. I had a feeling he was going to "prove" his statement. If Patty failed he would say "see, told you so, it was too hard for her." The funny thing is our next door neighbor is the tutor for that subject. When the next test came up we had my neighbor study with her here at home for about 25 minutes. That's all!!! She did nothing different at home except for my neighbors assistance in discussing what the terms meant. She took the test yesterday. Guess what, she got a B!!!!! Patty said, "Hey Mom, when he graded my test and told me I got a B he seemed mad." Well, no kidding. She just proved him wrong!!!! Yet again, there is a person who doesn't believe in Patty and yet again though she suffered she did what was told she couldn't. Maybe if this guy attended the meetings and understood her disabilities he would have had more compassion, understanding, and teaching ability. AND it just goes to show that with the appropriate techniques she can do things. She is no genius, and struggles in school to keep up. She has to work twice as hard as otherst sometimes. But she always has to prove she is not as limited as they think she is. I am so proud of her.
