Indeed. It's very much judging books by their covers to assume we know how other autistic people feel about their lives. I remember a survey from a while back into how children with disabilities assesssed their quality of life and how other people assumed their quality of life was much lower than the kids themselves reported. Maybe we can't ask some of the more obviously autistic people, but that doesn't mean we have the right to assume it's awful to be them. I bet lots of NT folk would think it must be awful to be us, if all that was described to them were our limitations. Genyin -- " I know the answer! The answer lies within the heart of all mankind! Guest guest
Genyin, I think I agree with you. My life contains too many examples on both sides of this equation, and therefore, I can relate quite a bit. As to NTs not wanting to be us, if you describe our strengths, you might get a different reaction. I have ahad at least one college classmate aask me politely not to discuss my synesthesia around him, because it made him jealous. Plenty of Nts I know have stated that they wished they had mathematical ability like mine. On the other hand, these NTs certainly do not know me all that well, I think. In the same way, while I can remember being non-verbal quite well, I was never embarrassed by it, in that I talked early. On the other hand, I do remember trying to tell my father something, and not being able to communicate it for lack of language. He eventually understood me anyway, on most occasions. For me. lack of theory of mind has made my ability to speak insufficient at times. Therefore, I can relate to a person who cannot say what he wants to, a little bit.
